My thoughts on the ocd spectrum test in the first few pages.
By Andrew
I have been going to a psychiatrist since 2007. I am 28. I have been diagnosed with ocd and I am still on meds. I've tried various self-help stuff. My last effort was completing the attacking anxiety program from the Midwest center. I am in talk therapy now, but that is only vaguely helpful. Whether you think you have ocd or ocpd, use this book. As it later states, everyone has scary thoughts. OCD is just extreme anxiety. Everyone could benefit from this book I am sure. I made it to step eight before starting over, because I did too much exposure at once, producing an awful backslide. Now I'm back on the horse. I restarted this book. I read ten minutes each day and make notes. I periodically review the notes for each day. It sucks having to face my fears, but I love the freedom. My doctor is great, but this book grounds me in reality in between the visits. Getting over anxiety and depression is hit and miss, trial and error. It is a life-long process. But stress is necessary for survival. If you keep trying, one should succeed. Even if you have doubts, do something. One percent of happiness is better than doing nothing at all. The book also says to have faith and learn to deal with uncertainty. I'm not religious or spiritual, but I have faith that nature will guide me through this.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've some rituals to do, for tomorrow is a new day, full of opportunities for gradual exposure and a lot of discomfort. :) Best of luck to you all.

Absolute Best Workbook for OCD
By Ann
This workbook is the best and I've read them all. What makes this workbook stand out is its comprehensiveness. It covers every type of OCD symptom and has a individualized plan for each type. This is one is different because it covers your thought processes (cognitive therapy) before you even get into the behavior therapy (CBT) which is at the heart of recovery.

I've had OCD for over twenty years and this workbook has helped me tremendously. I recommend it highly whether you go it alone or with a therapist.

A solid introductory read
By Jelly Bean
As someone with a family member who suffers from OCD behavior, this book has been very helpful. I bought two books for him to read and give some consideration to, this and the OCD workbook, and it helped him evaluate where he as it relates to some of his thoughts and behaviors. Sometimes an awakening comes in a moment in real life, sometimes it comes by way of a loving family member, and sometimes it from something in a book which strikes a chord. I think he found both books helpful.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
This book covers the history and social effects of the principal beverages that contain caffeine, notably coffee and tea. Products of cacao, chocolate that is eaten and drunk, and the soft drinks that contain caffeine (principally colas) are also covered. The historical origins of coffee, tea, and cacao are described, as are the various fascinating ways they made their way into world culture. Some of the main features of this story are told with a theme of geographic spread and with a description of effects of the arrival of "the drug," as the authors often refer to caffeine, on existing cultures. How the different beverages were received (or rejected) by different cultures and by different strata and segments of each culture makes a rich and exciting story. Insights emerge as to how the various civilizations worked. The pleasure of reading is enhanced by the authors' eye for beauty and the many appropriate half-tone illustrations. The scholarship is impressive; many of the most famous figures of the past 500 and more years make brief appearances. Among them are Chinese emperors, Zen Buddhist monks in Japan, nameless Olmecs of Mesoamerica, and then Cortes and Montezuma and Charles V. The conquest of Europe by the drug from Turkish and African sources is also covered. The familiar names of great historical figures appear on almost every page, tying this account in with our knowledge of history and making it more real. The text is rich with information, yet it is easy and pleasant to read.

Social factors are discussed. For example, there are comparisons of the tea culture of England with that of Japan and comparisons of both with the coffee culture of the United States. The duality of the culture of coffee (as in coffee houses) and the culture of tea (as in tea shops, tea gardens, and afternoon tea) is emphasized and illustrated with a list of more than 30 word pairs. One word in each pair is labeled the "coffee aspect" and the other the "tea aspect." The list of coffee aspects starts with "male," "boisterous," and "bohemian" and ends with "Balzac," whereas the list of tea aspects starts with "female," "decorous," and "conventional" and ends with "Proust." Cola beverages are said not to have a long enough history to have features as well differentiated as these, but they do have distinctive associations, such as "youth, high energy, America, pop culture, and `good clean fun."' Although the authors emphasize that all these popular beverages contain the drug caffeine, the diversity of the cultures associated with the different beverages suggests that caffeine is only one factor leading to their consumption.

True to its title, the book has little to say about alcohol, but the authors do make the important point that, at least in Europe and North America and at least in the large towns, raw water was not fit to drink until late in the 19th century. The increase in tea and coffee drinking offered an alternative to the usual beverages: beer, gin, and rum. The authors credibly associate this shift with a decrease in alcohol intake, to the benefit of society.

In the second half of the book, the nature of the story changes. The urbane historical perspective gives way to more recent concerns, including a discussion of what might be called huckstering by purveyors of caffeine products. Almost the final third of the book is devoted to the chemistry, pharmacology, and medical aspects of caffeine. I do not think that in a book of this size it is possible to present enough of an understanding for readers to reach their own conclusions on adequate grounds about the health and safety aspects of caffeine, and in many instances the original sources must be scrutinized for the adequacy of the evidence. In addition, there are errors. For example, a woman is said to have had a serum caffeine concentration of almost 300 mg per milliliter, which is many times the solubility of caffeine. Readers can remain confused, they can accept the often implicit conclusions of the writers, or they can opt out and simply trust the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A number of minor matters follow. Pure caffeine is variously described as "highly toxic" or "extremely toxic." An agent that can be ingested in amounts of several grams with relative impunity would not customarily be considered very toxic. A number of common foods -- dry mustard, horseradish, or cayenne pepper, for instance -- would not go down well as boluses of several grams. The poison of the puffer fish, whose flesh is eaten in Japan, is highly toxic, being hazardous in quantities thousands of times smaller than ordinarily consumed quantities of caffeine.

Finally, the authors aver that the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was founded to help forestall efforts to regulate caffeine. But the FDA was regulating caffeine long before the ILSI was formed. The Caffeine Technical Committee of the ILSI was formed by interested companies to sponsor research on questions on caffeine raised by the FDA and others. It is prohibited from lobbying.

From Booklist
Readers who, like Prufrock, measure out their lives in coffee spoons will appreciate the background on their drug of choice provided by science writers Weinberg and Bealer. The authors wander through caffeine's history, exploring coffee's Arabian origins, tea's roots in Asia, and chocolate's background in the Americas. They consider how these different forms of caffeine found their way to Europe, and how they were accepted in different countries, ultimately suggesting a nexus between this drug and reliable clocks as essential contributors to the Industrial Revolution. In examining "caffeine culture," Weinberg and Bealer discuss three nations--Japan, England, and the U.S.--where caffeinated beverages are particularly popular, and then discuss the role of these beverages as the new millennium begins. The book's last two sections shift from history and anthropology to chemistry and biology, considering the nature of caffeine and its relatives and by-products, and the effects, positive and negative, of caffeine on specific organs and on mental function. Includes photographs and cartoons, charts and graphs, and a number of useful appendixes. Mary Carroll

Well-researched, interesting, readable
By Audra Yoder
Weinberg and Bealer have produced a detailed, well-written, and engaging work on the natural and cultural history of the three caffeinated beverages - coffee, tea and chocolate - that radically changed European dietary habits and customs beginning in the seventeenth century. Unlike most popular histories of these commodities, Weinberg and Bealer's book documents its sources well and distinguishes between legend and reliably documented fact.

This is a hybrid book. Parts 1-3 offer a detailed cultural and economic history of the three drinks. There is some repetition in these sections, and the serious student of the history of any one of these beverages will be flipping back and forth in order to get a unified chronological narrative. To the authors' credit, however, the histories of coffee, tea, and chocolate are so complex and so interrelated that any author would be hard-pressed to do much better.

Parts 4 and 5 offer a detailed account of the botanical and chemical characteristics of the three plants, and present a summary of the latest research on the effect of caffeine on the human body. Throughout, the evolution of Europeans' (and later Americans') understanding of the nature of caffeine is treated with flair and nuance.

This is one of the best histories of coffee, tea, and chocolate available, and probably the most up-to-date. Readers with a serious interest in these matters would do well to read this book alongside two older classic works, Schivelbusch's Tastes of Paradise (on which the authors rely heavily) and Mintz's Sweetness and Power.

You're going to need caffeine to finish this book
By marymuse
Weinberg and Bealer's The World of Caffeine brings together history, science, culture, and medical studies into one large volume. What promised, according to the cover, to be a book on the science and culture of the world's most popular drug, ended up being a boring treatise on the history of caffeine. It was only towards the last 1/3 of the book, that it really started picking up, and even then, the medical information bogged down.

The authors are careful to list all sides in the caffiene debate, from medical studies, to historical perspectives, never endorsing one side or the other. Because of this lack of a firm position on caffeine, the book read with a very dry, emotionless tone. I found the history interesting, but presented as it was here without any correlations and in strict, chronological order, it sounded more like a text book. Such circumstances, such as the rivalry between the British East India Tea Company and the Dutch East India Tea company might have made for more exciting reading, had they been explored further.

As someone who has had an on again-off again relationship with caffeine, I expected more than this book delivered. I wanted a thoughtful, compelling look at caffeine, not dry facts. Still, the book is interesting, if you can slog your way through it.

Well-researched and entertaining.
By JWH
This is great reading! Caffeine is so ubiquitous within society that most of us have never really thought about how or why we use it. In this very comprehensive book, the authors detail the history of coffee, tea, and chocolate. This includes their discovery, cultivation, introduction into various societies around the world, impact on society, opposition efforts and medical implications. The book is written in a very evenhanded tone without a noticeably pro-caffeine or anti-caffeine agenda. It is full of absolutely fascinating historical tidbits. Who knew that coffee replaced beer as the morning beverage in the United States, or that the U.S. Government once brought suit against Coca Cola arguing that the caffeine in the soft drink caused bad behavior in adolescent boys? This book may not motivate you to forgo that morning cup of coffee, but you certainly will stare at it with a bit more insight.

Review
"...a good literary soap opera." -- Library Journal

About the Author

Edith Wharton (1862-1937), American novelist and short-story writer, was born in New York City. Strongly influenced by Henry James, she is best known for her subtle and su-perbly crafted studies of the tragedies and ironies in the lives of members of middle-class and artistocratic New York soci-ety in the the nineteenth century. She was educated in New York and Europe, and married Edward Wharton, a Boston banker, in 1885. When her husband became mentally ill, she cared for him until 1913, when she settled permanently in France and divorced him. Among her best and most characteristic works are The House of Mirth (1905) and The Age of Innocence (1920), for which she received a Pultizer prize.

Not your average Wharton novel, but well worth reading!
By A Customer
I'm not sure why two positive reviews, including one that appears to be a piece of advertising for something called "Republica Publishing," show up with no stars. At any rate, this is one of Wharton's most interesting novels, although it doesn't have the symmetrical structure of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. If you're interested in a different work by Edith Wharton, one that involves industrialism, professions for women, euthanasia, divorce, and a host of interesting events, try THE FRUIT OF THE TREE.

Justine is a very appealing character
By Joan Sutton
I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent novel. Wharton has created two flawed yet admirable characters - the young doctor Amherst and the virtuous nurse Justine. It wrung my heart out. But then all Wharton's novels do that to me. She is such an excellent writer that she brings you into her world more effectively than a movie. Her books are all very difficult to lay aside and stay with you long after reading them. I downloaded her complete works onto my Kindle for 99 cents! Never were pennies more effectively spent.

Unsuccessful experiment with a socko last section
By Catholic book friend
I am on a Wharton rampage at the moment, tearing through less-known works that I had never even heard of until recently. As far as I know, this is the only one of her novels that deals head-on with industrial labor-management problems. It concerns a factory in a depressing small town: the oppressive conditions of its workers, the unjust wealth and ease it creates for its owners and their hanger-ons, and what happens when a determined reformer sets out to change the way the factory is run. Wharton portrays these issues through the story of the reformer's troubled relationships with two women, the rich young widow who owns the mills and a nurse, a childhood friend of the widow's who must now earn her way in the world. The nurse is the novel's real protagonist.

Unlike other writers who tackle class conflicts, e.g., Balzac or Eliot, Wharton makes the sketchiest possible effort to depict the workers themselves. She sticks to the milieu she knows, the world of upper-class drawing rooms, although as usual she reveals them to be full of secret social and economic tensions. Unfortunately, Wharton's distance from her chosen subject-matter--we are not even told what the factory and mills produce (some kind of cloth, apparently, as there is talk of carding-machines)--distances the reader from it as well. We learn much more about the thwarted desires of the do-gooder than about the desires of the human beings whom he proposes to help. As a result, both his motives and his plans are rather suspect in a way that I am not sure Wharton intended. The novel itself becomes abstract and dull and the characters don't come to life. I found myself feeling sympathetic toward those who resist the reformer, especially his first wife (the widow), whom he expects to hand him her mills and money to manage, to reduce her lifestyle, to rent out one of her properties, etc.

The marriage fails almost as soon as it begins along with the reformer's plans. Wharton then has to devise a way for the reformer to achieve his goals while also finding him a more suitable helpmeet. Wharton does not like divorce, so the wife must die. This plot requirement leads to the only really interesting part of the book. Previous reviewers have already explained how Wharton pulls the plot off. I will just add that the last part of the book unexpectedly rises nearly to the level of Wharton's great novels as we follow the twists and turns of the heroine's moral life as she slowly, agonizingly comes to terms with the repercussions of a well-intentioned but unlawful act of mercy. But the reformer, now her husband, finally achieves his dreams without having to undergo a comparable moral awakening. The book ends, like so many Wharton novels, on a chilling note of female suffering and injustice. Read it for the last section.

Attention: The novice in French should start with our SmartFrench - Introduction to French, Vol.1 and Vol.2 first, to study the basic grammar, conjugation and vocabulary that we observed you need in order to get a perfect foundation.

The horse - in French, is - Le cheval -. Would you like to be taught to say: - luh shuhvahl -, as taught by most products listed (which is correct only when you read), or: - luhsh fahl -, the way it will sound in a regular conversation and the way SmartFrench teaches? This difference is true for most words.

Learning French requests that you learn to speak French and that you learn to understand it. Vol.1 and Vol.2 will teach you to speak and these SmartFrench Audio CDs Beginner will teach you to understand and be understood.

If you enter a conversation in French with no training to listen to it, you will not be able to get what is coming back to you. Then your French studies will be worth nothing. On the other hand, even if you feel hesitant to speak French, you can have a conversation saying just “yes” or “no”, as long as you understand the other person. That’s why to develop listening skills is so important. With SmartFrench you will develop two-way conversation skills.

The audio CDs can be played anywhere. The CDROM - also available on amazon.com, is for the computer. It contains all three levels and some extras, as well as the videos of the interviews on which the lessons are based (to see people when they speak always helps.)

Also available: SmartSpanish, SmartItalian, SmartFrench for Travelers.

A real breakthrough in my efforts to learn French
By Elizabeth Phillips
Finally, a program that is helping me to UNDERSTAND the spoken language. I have always been able to mimic my teachers, I've worked hard and learned vocabulary and verb conjugations. But I couldn't figure out why I had no idea what native french speakers were saying, or why I couldn't watch french films without subtitles. It was so frustrating, that I would just give up. This program unravels the mystery. For example, native french speakers don't say, "Je suis," they say "shwee." Who would have thought? Like the instructor says, it's traditionally not taught this way because few natives realize the extent to which they employ liaisons in their everyday speech. This program provides lots of opportunity to listen to real french people having real conversations, and to practice sans accent. It's been a real breakthrough for me.

A review without all the B.S. and fluff
By Marilyn-Monroe
Okay I'm going to just dish out the straight facts about this product without the fluff or the lies:

1. The cds come with a booklet. Download the cd to your ipod if you want to take it everywhere you go.

2. This doesn't teach vocab, doesn't help you magically have conversations on the streets of Paris. This is not Pimsleur/Micheal Thomas etc.

3. When the guy starts doing numbers, be prepared to just stop repeating because as soon as he gets to thirty or forty, he speeds up and you're left biting the dust. I'm not kidding. I skip it.

4. This course is EXTREMELY GOOD for pronouncing and differentiating certain sounds, such as the "u" in "tu" and "ou" in "fou". This has helped me tremendously and my tutor has definitely noticed a difference.

5. Not only is this course good for pronunciation, but for understanding speech. For example, why some words aren't said in daily speech or are clipped short...something you do NOT learn in a classroom setting. It helps with liaisons as well. It makes you see and understand why french in the real world sounds a hell of a lot different/confusing/faster than french in the classroom.

6. There are different conversations to follow and listen to, different voices, so you're not listening to one person and getting accustomed to their voice.

7. There's repetition that'll annoy you but repetition helps loads. He does a good job at pronunciating everything slowly and exaggerated so you can wrap your mouth around it.

8. Repetition is key, no matter how boring the topics on this cd are.

Overall, I rate this a four because I found that "The Sounds" section is extremely beneficial. It's the phonetics portion of this course and that's what a lot of intermediate and advanced students like to work on to sound more french. If you want vocab, try Vocabulearn or read a book in french (easy reader, Harry Potter), watch movies and check out TV5. If you want to converse or work on it, hire a tutor or find one on Skype.

The Best French Language Program I Have Tried
By Cal Bear
I took three years of French in high school over twenty years ago, and I recently decided to take up the language once again. I have tried various programs, such as Rosetta Stone, Michel Thomas, and Pimsleur. However, when I tried to have a conversation with native French speakers, I was always disappointed because a) When they spoke at a natural pace, other than picking out a word here and there, I could not understand what they were saying and b) While I could make myself understood, I was told that my sentences were too rigid or unnaturally formal.

As far as I know, Smart French is the only program available that teaches the student to speak in a natural and fluent manner. The program begins with an excellent review of French sounds. Then, a series of vignettes are presented in which an interviewer discusses a topic with everyday French speakers such as a model, a chef, an art curator, a metal worker, an actor, etc. The converstations are presented in stages. The first stage, breaks down the sentences into bite sized segments in slow motion. The ensuing stages move progressively faster, until the sixth stage, when we hear the actual interview at normal speed. At first the converstions seemed impossibly fast, but after listening to them a few times, I began to understand more and more of what the speakers were saying.

The Smart French course has helped me tremendously in developing an ear for French as it is spoken by real people and in improving my accent. In my opinion, it is by far the best program available, and the best value for the money.

Just the tips..
By RyTaj
With nearly 9% unemployment there is a tremendous amount of competition in the marketplace for open positions. Sometimes the smallest factors can get a candidate hired.. or passed up for a great job. Having worked as an executive recruiter for 6yrs I can't stress enough the importance of interview fundamentals, be it the proper format and content of a resume, attire for an interview, company due diligence, demeanor, posture or even hygiene. Ryan through his show and now this book does a fantastic job of identifying key points all interviewees should be aware of. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to start their career but also to those looking for a comprehensive review and recap of information they are aware of.

I recommend this book.

Great Tips!
By Mitche11
It was refreshing to get a real world perspective on what I should be doing during my job search. The resume writing and interviewing skills I received from my academic advisers was very stale and generic and didn't really relate to the career field I'm looking in. It was incredibly helpful to receive guidance on MY career goals from an "outside the box" expert!
