Excellent for a self-paced or crash course in introductory accounting
By Diana
Most of the other reviewers who have given this book 5 stars have it right. I first heard of this book by doing a Google search for the syllabi of accounting courses. This book appeared on the syllabus for an introductory acccounting course for the MBA program at Columbia University. I think the description of the course said that its purpose was to teach accounting to students with non-finance backgrounds (paraphrasing). That's what I needed so I became interested in the book. I read the other reviews on Amazon and bought the book. From my experience, the 5-star reviewers turned out to be right.

This book is an introductory level accounting workbook (as opposed to a textbook). It teaches you accounting through exercises like fill-in-the-blanks. That might sound like grammar school, but that's the point. The book's title is exactly what you will get, the essentials of accounting, without all of the minutiae that make other books hundreds of pages long. And you will be prepared enough to follow along during the first few weeks of an introductory MBA course.

Nevertheless, if you already understand accounting and want to get into financial analysis (ie, valuation, forecasting, etc...), you're going to need a completely different book. I used two when I first started out: 1- Analysis for Financial Managment by Robert Higgins and 2- Finance for Managers by the Harvard Business Press.

mis-labeled product...
By Hiking Nut
As several people have stated already, this is NOT a text book. It is a WORKBOOK. I am VERY disappointed this continues to be mis-represented in the product description. And the thing that REALLY irritates me is I asked two different people at Amazon (one on IM and one by phone) if this was one "book" (bound together in one cover...both the text book and workbook). Both said it was.

Having already spent $65 thinking I was getting a combination text book/workbook, then finding out that I have to spend an ADDITIONAL $40 for the text book is unacceptable. I'm not sure who is responsible for writing the product descriptions, but I think equal blame goes to Amazon and the publisher.

To those of you who are saying the pages are printed upside down, please READ THE SECOND PAGE OF THE INTRODUCTION in the front of the book. It clearly has the following info:

"NOTE: Halfway through the book, the pages reverse so that the response column will always be on the right-hand side of the page. At this point you must turn the book over to move forward through the frames."

What this workbook does is ask questions, on the left side of the page, and has answers to the immediate right (they provide a tear-away "card" at the back that you can use to cover up the answers as you go).

On a positive note, when I called Amazon last night to complain about this, they apologized and then gave me a $5 discount towards my next purchase (which I turned right around and applied to the text book "Core Concepts of Accounting (10th Edition) [Paperback]" ISBN# 0136029442.

I asked the woman I spoke with several times to make sure the product description is updated, so we'll see how quickly that gets done.

I give it 3 stars because of the problems noted above. It looks like it will be useful. I'll repost once I've actually used it.

For Beginners with Advanced Learning Curve
By tbutcher
First off, I am not an economics, business or related major by any means, so please understand that this is a review for those who decided to study something else in university. Like me then, I'm sure there are those who want to balance themselves a bit against being told consistently that there may be some accounting involved in XYZ job and that you might not be suited. Think of this book as a great way to really crack into the world of accounting with its twelve chapters, some several hundred "frames" (or questions), plenty of tests, as well as other helpful material.

My Dad recommended this text to me originally as part of his pre-Havard Business School preparation, and I found it in its 9th edition later. It is a fantastic "workbook" as it provides you with ample "frames" (or questions, normally fill-in-the-blank) that have you really digging into the concepts of accounting. The style of it demands that you work straight through the book, which I think is important to raise because some might want to jump to specific chapters. As each chapter compounds into the next, what you learn in Chapter One will certainly be discussed, built upon, and tested in Chapter Two and so on. The result is a rather steep learning curve that may have you getting frustrated, e.g. the "oo what was that again for the 10th time?" However, the positive side is that once you can really answer the majority of the frames without looking back to previous chapters or other frames (or seeing the answer just to the right) there is a great satisfaction.

It is a challenging guide that really gives you the "essentials of accounting." Personally, what I appreciated most was its emphasis on concepts of accounting from basic, e.g. "dual-aspect concept," to difficult, e.g. "realization concept," and then developing said concepts with practical accounting ideas, e.g. credits-and-debits or T-accounts. The result is that I feel confident about accounting, that is, I know I'm not expert but at least I can talk-the-talk and somewhat walk-the-walk. Moreover, I also think it provides a fantastic platform for future learning about accounting.

Enjoy!
