This book changed my life!

I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend in January 2010.
As a 36 year old, never married, recovering workaholic, it seemed to be right up my alley.
Two weeks after reading the book, I met the man who is now my future husband. I approached our relationship with a new attitude, based on the tips and advice from the book. I spent time envisioning our future together, and I was clear on what I wanted and needed from the relationship. Ten months later, he asked me to be his wife. We are getting married next month!

The 18 stories in this debut collection range from the disquieting to the bizarre to the terrifying. One stands out for having all these qualities. A woman discovers a "flesh-colored hump" on her shoulder that cannot be removed. What is frightening is not the plot, which finishes on a vague note, but the woman's all-consuming obsession--"It might have been possible that the hump jiggled and swayed somewhat less now than it had when it first appeared, a month before; it seemed harder, and being harder, it also seemed smaller." Another chilling story concerns a miniature pet horse that seemingly becomes a metaphor for the psychological and sexual abuse of weaker creatures--"I would knead him then; he never struggled . . . and once, because I held him for so long, he began to howl." Other stories, including one about a self-abusing boy-man who hungrily stuffs himself with furniture and later becomes a judge, sacrifice internal logic for shock value. While some tales are successful for their rhythm and lyricism, the focus on the gruesome and the lack of character development make this a generally uneven work.

Seriously, buy and read her books. NOW!

Stacey Levine's collection, My Horse and Other Stories, and her novel Dra-, are among the most stunningly bizarre and pleasing works of fiction that I have ever read and I count them among only a handful of books that I frequently pick up and begin reading for writerly inspiration, as they defy categorization and never lose their capacity to surprise and amaze. Anyone who seeks writing in the tradition of Kafka and Kobo Abe will absolutely love these books. Publishers Weekly mentions "sacrificing internal logic," but a more accurate description might be either "redefining" it or "not succumbing" to it. If internal logic is tone and voice, then Stacey Levine's work introduces even the most jaded reader to something completely new. As a reviewer once wrote (apparently I am not supposed to refer to reviewers on this page), her writing is often both "simultaneously funny and disturbing," and combined with her rapturous lyricism, the effect is cathartic and out-of-body, even when the writing is explicitly exposing "the oppressive mechanisms" of the body itself, as the reviewer so aptly described it. Even the darkest and most disturbing passages cannot be called "gruesome" (as PW put it) because they are controlled so expertly by Levine's masterful tone that there is always a kind of strange otherworldly beauty that shines through, and humor, uproarious humor that suddenly wells up, making one want to immediately share it with whoever is around, including strangers, for these are among the most laugh-out-loud funny books I have ever read. Even in the darkest most blackly poetic scenes there is a kind of disturbingly giddy humor that makes one want to climb out of one's skin for joy. On the other hand, if what is meant by "internal logic" is the trite conventionality and expectation that continues to hold morbid sway over the dominating and overspent traditions of realism (yes, I am beginning to sound full of myself, sorry) than this is exactly the sort of writing that Levine refuses to succumb to, and that is what makes her writing so great: not tired routine and sleepwork, but high heavenly art. Seriously, buy and read her books. NOW!

Often simultaneously funny and disturbing, these stories will resonate years after a first reading. Her expert use of the surreal is often called Kafka-esque, an overused and misused literary cliche that, for once, fits the bill. Her keen grasp and expression of humanity's politics precisely suits Kafka's legacy while her expert use of language and imagery remind us that writing really is an art.

Very inspiring and definitely helpful.

I learned about the false self and how it plays out in the mind on a daily basis, and this is why we have to recognize what it is that is guiding us falsely. I do have to read again because to be enlightened with this kind of knowledge is not purely seen right away. I also loved Mr. Finley giving examples when he sets out to make his point clear - not every author of such subjects can do this so nicely. I loved that part of the author's writing. On the other hand the author does get abstract and this required for me to SLOWLY digest the message. I would recommend this book to all my friends, relatives and close acquaintances. This is a prized piece of work on a much needed subject for those who seek a happy life through learning how to let go.

The Secret of Happiness

I feel like the book is mis-titled. It should be titled "The Secret to Happiness - Letting Go".

This book is filled with wonderful instruction about how to let go of all the things that are holding us back from achieving happiness in our lives. The book is well written, easy to understand and filled with stories to illustrate or illuminate the point the author is making.

While it is easy to read, for some people it will take more than one reading to fully grasp the concepts Guy Finley is advocating. The book requires us to adopt a totally different mindset. That does not happen overnight. It requires some indepth study and contemplation. We need to develop an awareness of how we are blocking our quest for happiness - -how we get in our own way and become our own worst enemy.

We all have been programmed with lots of mis-information. We need to re-program our minds. To let go of all these negative thoughts. We must let go of fear, anger, resentment. This book tells us how to let go of all the things that keeps us stuck in our present circumstances.

But it will take accepting these truths and then acting on them to realize the true value of letting go. It is simple, but because of our prior programs which have become ingrained habits, it will not be easy.

Gets boring half way through

I had seen a feel lines and it looked like a good book, had a point to it. And in the beggining it did. But half way through, when you start beleiving that it will teach you something, it just.... stops! And I mean it keeps repeating it self, but doens't actually say how you're supposed to go anywhere. Self help books on the need to see things different there are plenty. And I feel someone who looks for this kid of book, does want to see things different to begin with, the point that never gets answered is HOW? To me that would be the big "secret"behind anything, and the question remais, but with even more doubts after reading this book.

I enjoyed this book. It is not a stand-alone novel. It's a sequel to one book as well as a prequel to a new set of books. The author writes very well; I was able to immerse myself into the world that was created. The story is told from many points of view, as its predecessor did, if not more so. I certainly didn't expect any of the characters to end up where they did and I suspect this is the very reason I ended this book both puzzled as well as happily. Again, it is a prequel to a new set of books. I wouldn't say it has cliff hangers though; the last chapter has us reading about some characters 10 years later. It's not for children or YA; there's sex and cursing, yay!

Great for lovers of Ancient Rome

As a historical novelist, I found this book a great source of contemporary comments about various sites in the ancient city. Where else would you find out that Agrippa originally wanted to name the Pantheon for Augustus, but Augustus declined? If you're planning to visit and/or write about ancient Rome, Rome Alive and the Oxford Archaeological Guide to Rome make an excellent pair of guidebooks.

Being not only a teacher of Ancient Roman History, but also an avid tourist of the eternal city, I found this book highly readable and very practical. It is a valuable resource for the teacher, student and adventurer all in one volume. This book is a must for anyone who intends more than a cursory few hours in Rome, not on a tourist bus, but by navigating the winding streets of Rome with a bottle of water, a good pair of walking shoes and this book as your guide. This book really brings the marble glories of Republican and Imperial Rome back to life. It is also a must for the student and teacher as the author has collected a dazzling array of ancient sources on a myriad of important structures that have contributed to the western psyche of what Rome was like.

A well researched book about Floyd Collins.

In the 1920's Floyd Collins was trapped in a small, narrow and confining cave in Ky near Mammoth Cave. The book details the efforts to rescue him until he died several days later. The authors also entered the cave and photographed the current condition of the cave, giving the reader an idea of why the rescue failed.

A powerful book. It completly removed from my mind any idea I may of had about crawling around in caves.
