Cataloguing the world of heavy equipment, this vibrant square volume explores the unique capabilities of 11 vehicles, from construction trucks to rescue helicopters. On each spread, Mayo (Wiggle Waggle Fun) offers plenty of colorful adjectives and terse verbs: "Bulldozers are good at push, push, pushing, over rough, bumpy ground, scraping, and shoving." Ayliffe, who explored some of this territory before in The Busy Building Book, pictures two bulldozers, one yellow and the other red, attacking clods of dirt and showing trees no mercy as they maneuver around a hill at precarious angles. The artist works in brightly colored cut paper, adding just enough detail to the people and landscapes (the bumpy texture of caterpillar tracks, the grid work of a crane tower) to satisfy young enthusiasts. A refrain on each spread reminds readers that these distinctive vehicles share at least one similarity: "They can work all day." A final spread of a darkened town full of stilled vehicles demonstrates that even giant trucks and earthmovers need to turn off their engines: "Shhh! They can rest all night." Ages 3-5.

reSchool-K-Bold, bright spreads present visual word poems about large trucks, tractors, and cranes and the work they do. Often the shape of the rhyme reflects the action performed by the machine. For example, the bold, black print describing fire engines arcs and curves like the water splashing from the fireman's hose. Text about the bulldozer bumps across the page. "Bulldozers are good at push, push, pushing, over rough, bumpy ground, scraping and shoving." The verse on every page ends with the refrain, "They can work all day." Although not all of the rhymes are equally satisfying, they successfully move readers from page to page, truck to truck. The large, simple images in vivid colors and wide, uncluttered spreads will appeal to young children. Stylized skyscrapers dot the horizon in contrasting colors of purple and pink or blue and white, against very blue, sunny skies. The people are all Lego-like in appearance. The last spread, at the end of a very busy book, quiets its colors, with motors off and machines at rest. This book will rev the engines of those youngsters who love vehicles.

Each double-page spread is about one kind of vehicle--fire engine, tractor, digger, garbage truck, crane, transporter, dump truck, rescue helicopter, road roller, bulldozer--and the simple repetitive rhymes have the thumping rhythm of the machines in motion ("Diggers are good at dig, dig, digging, / scooping up the earth, and lifting and tipping. / They make huge holes with their dig, dig, digging"). The pictures, in clear shapes and brilliant colors, show people with machines swooshing fire hoses, loading garbage, rumbling and tumbling rocks, with power and immediacy. Very cute book with nice colors. Purchased the board book this time since the paperback was so well loved, it was falling apart. However, I am giving this 2 stars instead of 5 because it does not contain all of the pages/vehicles/etc. as the paperback version. Very disappointing. If you haven't read the paperback, it may not make as much difference...but our 2 year old, who has the book memorized, noticed and doesn't like reading this version of the book. He keeps asking where the other things are

Great book about the jobs of many work trucks! My 3 yr olds favorite

My son loves all things construction, and when we found this book at the library it was a sure winner! After several times of checking it out, I dicided that it might be good to just buy it on amazon. It was a used book, but was in great condition! This book goes though many work trucks, from tractors to diggers, rescue helicopter to bulldozers. It's a great book and the favorite every night before bed for my three year old.

About the Author
Jessie Carney Smith is a noted author, biographer, and black studies scholar. She is William and Camille Cosby Professor in the Humanities at Fisk University in Nashville, where she also serves as the university librarian. Among her numerous awards are the 1992 National Women's Book Association Award, the Candace Award for excellence in education, and "Sage" magazine's Ann J. Cooper Award for her published works on African American women. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

This book is a must-have for anyone interested in history. It is not restricted to blacks in America but is global in its scope and depth. In short, easy-to-read, paragraphs you can quickly assimilate scores of knowledge about the various and diverse contributions blacks have made and continue to make in any field you choose such as civil rights, the clergy, the military, medicine, law and the judiciary, the arts, and much more. Great book to track history

I purchased this book two years ago and it was well written and full of historical information. The advantage was having one source to obtain information on historical figures. When I saw the updated version i did not hesitate to purchase it. This is a must have for any library. The author is very detailed and writes easy read books.

I like the idea of the book

I like the idea of the book; but, I have found some information that needs to be corrected when you do an edit on it. Jack Gibson was not the first Black Program Director when he was at WERD, he was the Announcer that opened the mike and said, "Hello Atlanta, we are here and we ain't going no where!" My Uncle, Ken Knight was the Program Director; also, the National Association of Radio Announcers was founded by the 13 Original DJs of Black Radio and Jack Gibson and my Uncle, Ken Knight were two of the Original 13. If you go to the page for the owner of the station from the National Radio Hall of Fame page, you will see this information.

Simply the best

I have tied flies for 43 years. I have tied commercially while in high school and college. I own or have read virtually every book on fly tying, and have taken classes with a slew of great tiers. This is, quite simply, the best basic fly tying book I have ever seen. The organization is great. The selection of basic techniques is spot on, and the photography is superb in it's clarity and explanatory power. This is no surprise coming from Charlie, whose website has set the standard for great patterns and photographs. He says he'll do another book someday. I can't wait.

Just the way I like it, direct and to the point. As a new fly tier, I found this book very helpful and well organized. Hundreds of step by step photographs help you along the way, while getting acquainted with all the details about his hobby.

Don't bother wasting your money. But the on-line version.

Buying school books sucks. It's just another way that students become more and more in debt trying to get an education. I turned to Amazon for my last 3 courses and did rather well. Saving quite a bit over my college bookstore prices. However, this book was extremely much more expensive than any of the prior books ordered on Amazon. I figured that either it was enormous, or much larger in size (page length/width) than normal books, so proceeded with my order. I paid 160$ for this tiny, little, used book. Are you kidding me???? Not only was it used, it was written 9 years ago, isn't even a normal 9x6" size, and barely an inch thick. What the heck did I just pay for???? This was ridiculous. Looks like my education has taught me nothing thus far.
