I can't believe this is all hiding in Nebraska

It's amazing to think that these treasures reside to the west -- I had no idea, and neither did any of my contemporaries that this mecca for golf existed. Thanks to the author for bringing it to us. I did inquire why more pictures don't exist of the Sand Hills Golf Club and discovered that they were not allowed. So the poor reviews on Amazon below don't reflect the effort this author went to to put them in the book. I thought the book overall was just great and a very nice gift to several of my golfing friends. They loved it.
I've read some of the other reviews on golf books and there are definitely golf snobs out there. Get over yourselves.

Poor Quality Pictures

Good content in the book, with the "history" of multiple Sandhill golf courses. I thought it would be a little more appealing to the eye. I was expecting mostly a picture book, which it somewhat it, however the quality of the pictures is very poor. Some are better than others, but some look like they were taken with a cheap camera phone. Definitely not the quality I would expect from a $30 book.

A Disappointing and Amateurish Effort

This book over-promised and woefully undelivered. It is basically a $30 brochure for Jack Nicklaus' Dismal River Club, including 11 pictures of author Dean Kratz, his children, and his grandchildren. In that regard, Golf in the Nebraska Sand Hills is not only a tremendous disappointment, but a huge missed opportunity.

The star of this book *should* have been the world-renowned Sand Hills Golf Club, but Kratz saw fit to include only two low-resolution, 3�" x 5" pictures of part of the course. Worse, most of his research on Sand Hills was second- or third-hand. Almost no descriptions of playing the course are included. Kratz even wasted one chapter summarizing where Sand Hills ranks in other people's "best of" lists.

Instead, Kratz spent most of his time on Dismal River, the club where he is obviously a member and about which he attempted to wax poetic. Kratz even wasted eight pages on how five-time Open champion Tom Watson had staked out a preliminary plan for a second course. After five paragraphs, he finally revealed that the design job went to Tom Doak, instead. Talk about bait-and-switch!

Similarly, the author apparently could not be bothered to travel to the Prairie Club in Valentine or Ballyneal near Holyoke, Colorado. Virtually all of the information about those course comes second-hand, although Kratz was at least smart enough to include photography by Mark Adamson (Prairie Club) and Dick Durrance II (Ballyneal).

Kratz apparently did not want to be caught dead slumming at several excellent public-access courses across the region. He managed to grind out four very insufficient paragraphs about Wild Horse in Gothenburg, but with no original research or even an interview with architects Dan Axland and Dave Proctor. Not surprisingly, the author also ignored Axland and Proctor's Bayside Golf Course near Brule, Jeffrey Brauer's Highlands GC in Lincoln, and Jim Engh's Awarii Dunes near Axtell.

The author clearly attempted to edit his own book, because the writing is stilted in some places, while some amateurish misspellings made it into print ("Jack Nichlaus" on page 147). Kratz's own photography from Dismal River was reasonable in a couple of places, but completely irrelevant and very badly executed in others.

Do *not* spend $30 on this book, period. If you can find it used for $5 to $10, then it would be an interesting curiousity as far as Dismal River is concerned. Simply put, Dean Kratz is the Barack Obama of golf writers.

I love to hear the stories that no one else is telling.

I enjoyed the history of the towns, landmarks, and important people from around the area that I live. It was like a private behind the scene tour where all the real questions you wanted to ask were answered. All the stories that are passed around the campfire, but backed up by research and witnesses. I have shared so many of the stories in this book, and bought copies for my friends and family. I would love to see similar books about other towns.

Very imformative. I've lived in the area since I was young and didn't know any of the tales that were told. The authors depicted each story with clarity, not only in words but pictures and illustrations too. I can't wait to read more of the series and look forward to more from the authors of this book!

Fun Read for Ages

I purchased this book after researching a small cemetery in my community. As a photographer, this book inspired me to get out and shoot the locales mentioned in the book. Stories include bits of local history. The 'haunted' part is entertaining and I plan to buy more in the series.

Born at the Hopi village of Old Oraibi on Third Mesa and a member of the Parrot Clan, Bahnimptewa learned to carve Katsina figures from his grandfather and his involvement in ceremonies helped the artist depict the figures in ceremonial motion.

Designs are simple yet classy. The same goes for the designs on Nancy Alden's three other books - Simply Pearls, Simply Gemstones. Simply Silver. Easy to make for the intermediate beader.

Love this book. Some very pretty things. A little bit older, but I think a lot of the things would still look great today. I have not made anything yet, so I can not speak for the clarity of the instructions, but I just love some of the ideas.

Great resource, comprehensive coverage, a must-have for NP's starting their own practice

In my opinion, this book, along with Nurse Practitioner's Business Practice And Legal Guide are absolute "must-have" references for any nurse practitioner starting a private practice (and good to have for those already in private practice as well).

I had originally bought a few general "Starting your own business" type guide books and all fell short and were disappointing. Most were just a survey or very superficial overview more appropriate for folks dreaming about starting a business and wondering what is involved, but just not comprehensive enough for the serious individual actively starting up a new business. I gave up on finding a good reference book and ended up consulting an attorney and a CPA to have the questions answered that I needed regarding business structure, various legal issues and tax concerns. Shortly thereafter I found and bought this book and I really wish I'd found it before spending the money to consult the attorney and CPA as a good portion of my questions to them were covered in this book.

As you can see this book is pretty comprehensive and covers a good portion of what you need to know to get started. I suggest you pair it with the Buppert book I mentioned above, as that has a much stronger legal perspective and I think you'd be pretty comprehensively informed between the two. I have found them both invaluable during the process of starting up my private practice.
