Handy cards for learning about first aid

While these cards are handy when teaching kids first aid, they weren't as detailed or kid friendly as I thought they would be. They aren't bad for the price, but, along with the box that holds them, they are fairly bulky. For the size, they could have a lot more information on them.

Meh.

I was required to have this book for an undergraduate class. I'm glad I rented it, because I would have no use for it outside that class.

Like another reviewer stated, it's a VERY easy read. I honestly don't believe this is a college level book. Personally, do not like the way the author writes at all. He restates himself, theories and research so often it has provoked me to write this review.

For instance, in Chapter 13:
"However, a meta-analysis of many studies over a long period of time suggested that both initiating structure and consideration are related to both performance and group member satisfaction in the expected relationships. That is, consideration was more strongly correlated with satisfaction, and initiating structure was more strongly related to performance."

Unnecessary explanation of meta-analysis along with a fluff sentence so as to stall before he gets to the second sentence (this quote is preceded by two pages of explanation of the topic, as readers we already know these facts). The book is FILLED with whole chapters like this. It read as if the author has a stammer--just spit out whatever data you want to tell us about. No need to warm us up for three sentences just to tell us about about the same research you *already* mentioned in the opening paragraph.

My other complaint is, even though this is a recent publication, the bulk of the book's references date from the late 1800's to the 1970's. I have read almost every chapter and most of the text is dedicated to the founding theories and research that shaped I/O Psych. Most of the "new" research is in small blurbs at the end of paragraphs.

Another peeve: If the research mentioned didn't have conclusive findings, the author still includes it in his summary. This alone, isn't a problem but the way which he presents the data makes it seem as if the author is a little too hopeful. The author usually states information from an inconclusive study as, "X may be correlated to B." I could see this being confusing for students who haven't taken formal statistics. There's also a danger that, if reading quickly, these casual mentioning might accidentally be taken as a statistical 'truth'.

The book covers most of what you need to know to get background knowledge of Industrial Psychology history and theory. For me, I found it to be a dull read. Admittedly I am not interested in the subject of I/O, so it could very well make a great book for a person who really loves the subject.

It was a seriously dull read: the author constantly repeated himself, made sentences unnecessarily long and hard to read, and quoted studies only to later identify their findings as "inconclusive". Someone could have written the same book with the exact same content for half the volume. Most certainly not worth the $100 it costs. If you're dying to read this book for whatever reason (I can't possibly imagine why, as there are a plenty of books out there on I/O Psych), rent it, for free if you can.

Unresolved Ending

When I picked Life's a Beach up, I was hoping for a sweet romantic novel and that is exactly what I got. The story is very fast paced, it doesn't leave you a moment to get bored or have a wandering mind ... there is something going on at all times. And that's a great thing! There's nothing to be bogged down by and simply put, it's an easy read.

I found myself really connecting with the main character, Amelia. This chick says all the things that go through my mind at one point or another but unlike her, I don't have the balls to say them. When you're first introduced to this character, you think she's going to be a pain in the ass with just her persona ... she seemed like one of those girls that would drive me nuts but the more I got to know her throughout the story, the more I really liked her. She has a tenacity about her that is admirable and she's sassy to boot! Speaking of characters, I really enjoyed the rapport between Samuel and Marcus. Those two had me rolling with almost every interaction between them. I just love them.

Like I said before, the story was really fast paced and it is pretty cut and dry. What you see is what you get. This is one that would be perfect for a vacation read because you won't forget what is going on when you have to put it down for a bit and you can pick right back up where you left off.

Maybe we should get down to why I only gave this novel three stars. It seems like I enjoyed it, right? Well, I did. At least I did until the ending. Ugh. The ending felt like a cop out. It was over so quickly that it felt like it was left unresolved. I think that a few more pages would have done the book more justice. This was a straight up, five star book for me until I got to the last part and it was like someone poured cold water over my head while I was in the shower. It was a let down. That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to reading something else by this author. Life's a Beach kept me entertained and I enjoyed the story. I just wish I enjoyed the ending as much as I did the beginning.

Wow, what a good book from new to me author Jamie K. Schmidt! Life's a Beach is a fun, playful read that I found difficult to put down. The two primary characters, hotel concierge Amelia Parker, and successful businessman Samuel Kincaide, better knowm as "Dude" to his beach friends, have amazing yet complicated chemistry and their unique relationship keeps the plot hopping.

Amelia has spent the past year scrimping and saving for her winter vacation to Maui. She can't wait to get out of snowy New York City and spend some quality time with her boyfriend of three years. The day before her big trip, Amelia gets fired and finds her boyfriend having sex with the local barrista. As a result, she packs her life into her suitcase, picks up her homeless aunt and boards a plane to paradise. Paradise is beautiful, but her hotel is not. As a result, Amelia's expertise in the hotel industry gets her a job, and she slowly begins to make changes for the better at the Palekaiko Resort. Her new normal includes a boyfriend who is beyond hot and sexy, a ruthless competitor that resorts to kidnapping to get his way, and a family of locals that accept her and her ideas.

Samuel made a ton on money on Wall Street, but got off the stress laden roller-coaster when his good friend and mentor had a massive heart attack. Now he lives a quiet life, managing a rundown but clean hotel, giving snorkeling lessons at his leisure, and relaxing on a hammock with a beer in his hand. However, once Amelia shows up, his life turns topsy-turvy.

This is a sweet and extremely steamy novel. I loved the Hawaiian terminology, in addition to the beautiful landscape descriptions. Unfortunately, the ending prevented me from giving this book 5 stars. The story concluded abruptly, which left me bereft. Overall, this a fast-paced romance with great characters and an engaging plot.

Fun breezy and sexy "beach" read.

This is a sweet beachy read with a "can't keep me down" gal on the personal and professional rebound. Amelia is about to celebrate her second anniversary with her trust-fund brat boyfriend, Jay, in Maui with a hard-earned vacation when she loses both her job and the cheating cheater all in a few hours. Packing up all her belongings, and her eccentric Aunt Zarafina, Amelia's all ready to enjoy her all-inclusive vacay and perhaps kick start her life island-style.

While there, Amelia--a former concierge at a boutique hotel--sees the kitschy Palekaiko Beach Resort for it's former glory. It's now a bit run-down, and Amelia places the blame for that on the absentee owner the uptight and tightwadish Samuel Kinkaide. Amelia can't help getting involved with the thin-stretched staff, and falling a bit for beachcombing snorkel instructor "Dude;" if only she knew Dude = Samuel.

This is a breezy read with some seriously fun moments. I liked the development of the love story between Amelia and Dude (and eventually Samuel). There are some great insights to island life, including great elements of dialect and the shady underpinnings of the mafia. I loved how Amelia took charge of her world, and built something good for herself. Her psychic Aunt Zarafina is a trip--and I adored the close bond they shared. I was glad that Amelia and Samuel were able to get onto the same page, and work together. LIFE'S A BEACH is set as the first in a series, but I suspect other characters will find love matches in the books to come. The sexytimes are yummy, and the plot is fun, fun, fun. I was able to soar through this in an afternoon.

About the Author

Dierk König is a senior software developer, mentor and coach. He publishes in leading German magazines on software development and speaks at international conferences.

Dr. Paul King leads ASERT, an organization based in Brisbane, Australia which provides software development, training, and mentoring services to customers wanting to embrace new technologies, harness best practices and innovate.

Guillaume Laforge is the official Groovy Project Manager and Head of Groovy Development at SpringSource. He founded G2One, Inc. (later acquired by SpringSource), a professional services company dedicated to sustaining and leading the development of both Groovy and Grails.

Hamlet D'Arcy is the founder of the Basel-based Hackergarten open source coding group, and regularly participates and speaks at local and international user groups and conferences.

Cédric Champeau is a core Groovy committer. He joined SpringSource, by Pivotal, in order to help develope the language and he is responsible for the implementation of static type checking and static compilation in Groovy 2.

Erik Pragt is a passionate software developer with a broad range of experience in static languages like Java, and dynamic languages like Groovy. Having worked as a consultant for a broad range of customers mostly in the Telecom, ISP, and banking sector, Erik is now an independent freelance consultant. He founded of the Dutch Groovy and Grails user group, and is a regular conference speaker and trainer.

Jon Skeet is a Java developer working for Google in London. He is a C# author and community leader, spending far too much time on the Stack Overflow developer Q&A site.

This book was more than I expected. It was quite comprehensive and contained topics on Groovy I hoped would be present as well as topics about its use in ways I had not thought of. The material was written well targeted at a broad audience of readers from the novice programmer to experienced polyglot developers. It is useful as both an introductory book and as a complete reference.

Very clearly written. Very thorough in coverage of all aspects of Groovy. When I modeled my code after the examples in the book, all my code worked. Useful as both a reference and a guide.

You can't live without Groovy. You just can't.

I am going to make this short, because I want to get ONE message across to you, loud and clear. If you are working with Java, you MUST take a look at Groovy.

I cannot overemphasize the coming importance of Groovy on the Java platform, not just in web development, but everywhere. Just try it already. You'll "get it." Just trust me and do it!

Groovy in Action is a first rate introduction and reference, and you really do need a book for this language. I don't recommend trying to go it alone with online reference material, though there is plenty there to give you a taste of why Groovy is about to become your new favorite language.

Read the other reviews. I'm not going to repeat a bunch of stuff here. But whatever you do, TRY GROOVY. You will quickly come to wonder how you ever got along without it.
