Colombia is a strategically importantcountry. It is South America's fourth largest country in area and thesecond largest in population. It is the only South American countrywith coastlines on both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and it is con-tiguousto the Caribbean basin, Central America, Venezuela and itsoil fields, and Panama and the Canal. Colombia also has some of thelargest untapped petroleum reserves in the Western Hemisphere.Colombia's trajectory will also influence the direction of broadertrends in the unstable Andean region and beyond.This study, conducted in Project AIR FORCE's Strategy and DoctrineProgram, examinesthe sources of instability in Colombia;the objectives, strategies, strengths, and weaknesses of the majorColombian actors-government, guerrillas, and paramilitaries-and the balance of forces among them; andthe impact of the U.S. assistance program.The study concludes with possible scenarios for Colombia and theimplications of these scenarios for the security and stability of neigh-boringstates and U.S. regional security interests.This research was sponsored by the Deputy Chief of Staff for Air andSpace Operations, U.S. Air Force (AF/XO), and the Director ofStrategic Planning, U.S. Air Force (AF/XPX). I was impressed that the funding for this Rand study was provided by the U.S. Air Force. It is good to know a key player in the Pentagon is interested in the fundamental facts about Colombia free of the Washington Beltway political sugar-coating. To this end, "Colombian Labyrinth; The Synergy of Drugs and Insurgency and Its Implications for Regional Stability," is filled with tier-one research and honest comments.
To begin with authors Angel Rabasa and Peter Chalk carefully explain the weakness of the Colombian government. Certainly conditions have improved in Colombia since the publication of this text in June of 2001 but government power still resides in the big cities and is diminished in the countryside. However, the one nugget of research that the authors wisely publish is that Colombia has some of the largest untapped petroleum reserves in the Western Hemisphere. It helps explain why Colombia is the third largest receiver of U.S. foreign aid in the world after Israel and Egypt.
Still and all, a big point of this book is that the heralded President Clinton/Pastrana "Plan Colombia" U.S. aid program is a "doubtful strategy," according the the authors. Moreover, the central government's loss of authority, economic deterioration, social disintegration, the development of an underground criminal drug economy and the dangerous growth of armed challenges to the state's authority are all well-documented and discussed. The text also offers sound advice to the core problems, particularly the human rights violations by the violent actors in Colombia. COLOMBIAN LABYRINTH is an uneven but generally useful study of the drugs-insurgency nexus in Colombia and its significance for U.S. policy. The discussion of the illicit drug business breaks little new ground and misses important post-cartel dynamics such as the FARC's increased downstream participation in the business as traders and even exporters. On the other hand military-strategic topics such as the guerrillas' force structure and power seeking strategies, the military requirements for countering the growing guerrilla threat, and the implications of Colombia's civil conflict for regional stability are handled quite successfully. The authors point to the sometimes competing imperatives of drug-fighting and counter-insurgency--a difficulty epitomized by the dysfunctional coca spraying campaign--and argue correctly that U.S. policy should give priority to strengthening Colombian state institutions,including the military.(They might have recalled the example of Peru, which suspended eradication of coca at the end of the 1980s to garner rural support for the fight against Sendero,) The discussion of alternative Colombian futures is gloomy but thought-provoking and well worth the attention of Colombia specialists and policymakers. A scenario that might have been mentioned is the devolution of the FARC, or parts of the movement, into a preeminently criminal organization with a scaled down political agenda--seeking, perhaps, a free hand to traffic in drugs within defined spheres while acknowledging the overall authority of the Colombian state.

Colombian labyrinth is an objective, concise study of Colombia's instability as it unfolds from the interaction of criminal drug economies and growth of armed challenges to the state's authority. The study revolves about the three-sided civil conflict (government, guerrilla and self-defense groups) and how each one of them plays a critical role in the Colombian stability. On one hand, the study concisely touches upon the scope and the dimensions of the drug-insurgency problem, origins of the main players (guerrilla, self-defense groups), and their strategies. On the other hand, it discusses the Colombian government's response to the crisis in the form of peace negotiations, and the counter-narcotics U.S. assisted strategy, Plan Colombia (Colombian Project). In addition, it briefly presents a number of though-provoking scenarios for the Colombian state as a result of different circumstances. The study finishes by examining the spread of the conflict to neighboring countries and their respective response. Unfortunately, the study does not elaborate on the U.S. repercussions as they derive from the synergies of drug-insurgency complex.

hogan's zero

Muddy, unfocused, speculative, meandering, repetitive and for the most part, boring. Of interest chiefly for the background on the making of "Hogan's Heroes." As is so often the case, Graysmith presumes to be a much better investigator and writer than he is. This book is not worth your time. No definitive conclusion on the case, thus, a waste of paper and ink. Graysmith should stick to cartooning, where facts don't matter.

He was the guy who played the lead role in history's strangest sitcom, a farce about Allied soldiers imprisoned by the Third Reich. A few years later, Bob Crane was a prisoner himself, of typecasting and a swinger's lifestyle that was not only miserable and unhealthy, but as Robert Goldsmith posits in his book "Auto Focus", ultimately fatal.

Crane was bludgeoned to death in a Scottsdale, Arizona bedroom one June morning in 1978. That brought into sharp focus the sordid way he lived, using the dregs of a once-flourishing career to latch on to as many willing women he could find. Suspicion quickly centered on John Carpenter, a video guy who trolled for sex with Crane, yet the case against him was circumstantial and the horizon of others with motives too vast.

"When you go out like he did, you put yourself in positions where there are very sick scenes," says Joy Claussen, an actress working with Crane at the time of his killing. "When you are that open sexually, you are that nondiscriminative in the way you pick people, you are liable to find some sick people."

Originally published in 1993 as "The Murder Of Bob Crane", which became the subtitle when adapted for the screen as "Auto Focus" in 2002, Graysmith's book is poorly constructed and occasionally repetitive, but oddly hypnotic in the way it draws you into Crane's drab yet compelling world. It's like the flip side of "Boogie Nights", showing you the sad and sordid underbelly of the hot-and-horny 1970s. Like "Auto Focus" the movie, "Auto Focus" the book is explicit in its details but hardly erotic. You might prefer a vow of celibacy than living like this guy did, even minus the brutal end.

KSG's earlier comment here about feeling the spores in the A/C was right on. Graysmith not only charts Crane's last days in hourly detail, but provides a 3-D floor plan of the apartment where he stayed and was murdered. What were Carpenter's swim trunks doing in Crane's place? What clue did the killer give to his identity by cutting a wire from an almost-inaccessible location to wrap around the already-dead Crane?

Some criticize Graysmith's unwillingness to entertain more than one suspect seriously. It's obvious he thinks Carpenter, feeling betrayed by Crane's apparent unwillingness to continue their relationship (Crane's son Bob Jr. suggests his dad was losing his taste for the "kicks" he got with Carpenter tagging along), had the motive, and it's hard to argue with the blood-smeared rental car Carpenter left as evidence. But Scottsdale police, unused to murders, left some loose ends, and there were other worthy suspects, like angry husbands, freaky girlfriends, and a future ex-wife who stood to inherit Crane's fortune.

Graysmith sucks up details like a Hoover, and doesn't synthesize well. He brings up episodes like an opening one involving a flat tire that seem to portend much but is left flapping in the breeze. Too often he seems to be paraphrasing the police report, with no commentary of his own. Yet his artless style has a certain validity in how it presents critical case facts interspersed with ephemera, leaving you to make the connections. Even his detours into the desert life of Maricopa County, and the series run of "Hogan's Heroes" years before Crane's murder, brings out aspects of the victim's life and lifestyle that resonate when you think about them.

"Detectives had enough leads for a dozen murders," Maricopa County Attorney Charles Hyder declares in deciding not to pursue a case against Carpenter. Crane left a great story behind, and a life not worth emulating. "Auto Focus" is an intriguing police procedural and a worthy morality tale.

Justice Not Done!!

I recently saw the movie "Auto Focus" and have just finished reading Robert Graysmith's book. This book is a real page turner!! I really enjoyed Graysmith's Zodiac books, too. He is a very good writer and he knows his facts. The disappointing part of this book is that the killer went unpunished. If there was DNA testing in 1978, there is no way John Carpenter would have gotten away with this. This is a real tragedy especially since Carpenter was acquitted. This is a very good and interesting book!! Bob Crane was such a good actor. It's ashame that this happened.

What happens when you get what you want? The question haunts this funny, ultimately poignant memoir of a rock-and-roll fairy tale becoming a rock-and-roll nightmare. Briefly in the mid-nineties, Trynin was, much to her surprise, the subject of a major record-company bidding war. Lawyers, managers, and booking agents all wanted a piece of her, and Trynin devotes a lot of prose to her wooing by "industry types" smelling money. At first, she was flattered ("I'm so excited that anyone wants to meet with me at all"); later, overwhelmed. Despite excellent reviews, her debut recording's sales fizzled, and the telephone stopped ringing. She captures the strange sensations the music business affords: seeing one's face on a national magazine's cover; going on talk shows in which there is little, if any, contact with the host; inane interviews with clueless DJs; planned tours that don't materialize. She dutifully played the part of the rock star, always feeling like a fraud. Terrific reading for anyone interested in rock and the music industry. June Sawyers

Jen Trynin is on her way to a literary career a decade after her attempt at rock superstardom

Jen Trynin was an almost-made mid-1990's alternative rock superstar, and her memoir is billed as "what it's like to be catapulted to the edge of stardom, only to plummet back down to earth." As a music fan, I was obsessed with Trynin's contemporaries--Liz Phair, Hole, Nirvana, Aimee Mann, Better than Ezra, Alanis Morisette, the Goo Goo Dolls, and the like--but I don't remember Trynin's radio hit (which is, I suppose, what this book is all about).

Given the premise of a foiled attempt at rock superstardom, I read Trynin's narrative on the edge of my seat. Oh, is hiring this lawyer going to spell her demise? Hmm, is this unfounded loyalty to her backing band going to cause her downfall? Ah-ha--this choice of record label will be her death warrant! Did she not read her contract closely enough? Did she trust the wrong person? Is that rep a back-stabber? Did she screw up her indie cred and lose everything?

The reality behind Trynin's (lack of a) music career is much more subtle, less easy to pin-point, and well-narrated. This is a great story for any child of the 1990's, any musician, or any music fan. Trynin formed her own indie label when that meant having a direct fax line and spending hundreds of dollars on mailing list postage. It's a remarkable contrast to the wired podcast world a decade later, but the issues of dealing with a major label remain the same.

Jen is, above all, accessible. She's skinny in a heroin chic way, but she's terrified that people will discover that she doesn't even know whether heroin is something one snorts or injects. She doesn't know what her image is. She worries about being a "grown woman in a teenager's too tight corduroys." She's clueless about the music scene once she goes on tour, and thinks someone named Alice Morrison (Alanis Morisette) is the one everyone is watching on MTV.

Trynin hits at a lot of the pitfalls of the rock n' roll lifestyle without addressing them head-on. She goes days on nicotine and caffeine so that she can fit into her skin-tight pants, nevermind the foggy light-headedness. She knows that alcohol won't improve her performance, yet she downs it to calm her nerves, to escape, and suffers painful hangover-addled interviews on the days after her shows. She's in love with a long-term boyfriend, yet there are temptations on the road, and it is much cooler to have a free, easy-going image.

This terrific memoir is worth it alone for the time Trynin's music video appeared on Beavis and Butthead, for the backstory behind the Goo Goo Doll's smash hit "Name," and for the insider view on the (lack of a) process for creating music videos. It inspired me to buy Trynin's debut CD, Cockamamie, which is, unfortunately, out of print, but available on Amazon for less than a buck. That's a fitting end to this rock n' roll fairytale.

I laughed, I cried, it was better than VH1

I don't have my TV hooked up to anything besides a DVD player, but whenever I have an opportunity to watch cable, one of my favourite vices is VH1's Behind the Music. Each episode follows a formula: humble beginnings ... rapid ascent to stardom.... and then a downfall predicated by drug use, sex within the band, a mental breakdown or all of the above. In the final 15 minutes of the program, the artist is either eulogized, or, if still alive, redeemed through AA, therapy, or religious conversion. As if in a replay of Icarus, rock gods propel themselves into an intense spotlight only to plunge from the heavens with melted wings, providing solace to people like me who never got signed to a major label and live very ordinary lives.

"All I'm Cracked Up to Be" appears to follow the VH1 formula initially, but with at least one crucial difference. The book's rock and roll casualty, Jen Trynin, never becomes famous, but we get an excruciatingly intimate glimpse of the mechanics behind her tumble from promise. Trynin, a songwriter turned alt-rock frontwoman in the mid-nineties Boston music scene, is led to believe by industry wags that rock and roll stardom is at hand. Instead her hype-laden career whimpers to a halt despite major label backing.

The book humorously and heartbreakingly demonstrates the ill-effects of music commodification on an artist's sense of self. After Trynin grows tired of the "Sunday-to-Wednesday night folk/acoustic-chick-band-wasteland,"she reinvents herself as a rock star, or at least what she thinks one is. She then self-releases a brilliant CD, and a label war of epic proportions ensues. Her music industry courtship is replete with expensive dinners and first class accommodations, as well as dizzying dialog between Trynin and her lawyer over the financial intricacies of dueling record contracts. Soon a seemingly sweetheart deal from Warner leads to a grueling tour schedule dotted by the monotony of ratty motels, interviews with clueless DJs, and awkward label meet and greets, in stark contrast to the amenities and coddling of the sycophantic bidding period. It is also at odds with her fantasy of life on the road with a surrogate band family.

Trynin becomes disembodied and suffers an identity crisis epitomized by a fight with her bass player over a bowl of nuts and an Alice in Wonderland reaction to too much nyquil while at a hotel where coincidentally, catatonic Beach Boy Brian Wilson is also staying. The label realizes she is "losing it" when she marks a DJ's face with a sharpie. Meanwhile, her hit song begins its descent down the charts before the end of her first tour. Despite releasing a second album to critical acclaim, if not commercial success, she is forced by her label to endure the indignity of performing as an acoustic opener to a insufferable self-righteous lilith fair singer songwriter who just happens to have a hit at the time. Trynin's star doesn't rise according to the record company's timetable and corporate politics shift the engine's attention away from her. Trynin is thus callously cast aside as a "has-been who never was," with strains of Alanis Morisette playing in the background.

Trynin doesn't deny having a hand in her own demise in that she engages in a self-destructive, sexually-charged relationship with her juvenile bass player, reverts to a curt New Jersey demeanor in situations requiring graciousness, and drinks too much on the road. However, her alienation is exacerbated by being a cog in a music industry machine manned by ego-damaging hipsters such as the makeup artist who calls attention to the bags under her eyes and the Warner employee who cautions her not to make faces when she plays guitar. The entities that stand to make money off her don't appear to genuinely care about her or "get" her music. They only see an image of alt-rock heroin chic and hear a cash register. In fact, label honchos stay at the best hotels, on the artist's budget, while their benefactors are shuttled to Motel 6's. Trynin, the talented yet insecure head case, is their perfect pawn until she starts to be "difficult".

Trynin's creative drive is destroyed but she winds up pursuing a life not possible while touring: she goes back to school, marries and has a child. She misses the dream but not the reality of the music business. I didn't sense that she wrote the book to generate pity, but to provide insight into what went wrong with her career and perhaps serve as a caution to those who have their sights on the big time. I knew the book would not end well, but was gripped to the end to learn the how and why. Yet Tryinin does not maliciously point fingers, but instead provides a wryly humorous, yet terrifying view of what can happen when a promising artist surrenders control for career advancement and get sucked in an exploitive whirlwind. I highly recommend this book to any musician kicking themselves because they failed to get signed. You are probably lucky you didn't get what you wished for.

Coulda Been a Contenda

Anyone who knows anything about independent music knows that it's tough on the musicians. I happen to be close friends with several serious hardworking independent musicians who are outstanding talents, and I wish they were all world famous, but we still gotta be realistic. Jen Trynin gives us a pretty enjoyable memoir here, but there's not really too much that's revelatory about it. In a world where there's 10,000 struggling bands for every one superstar, and where trendy untalented saps get rich while serious artists starve, we know that the biz is brutal and everybody gets ripped off by the power players. The biz is known for chewing up and spitting out up-and-comers in the rush for easy profits, and that's kinda like what happened to Jen Trynin, but not quite. The advance descriptions of this book may have you believe that she was badly ripped off, and you might expect an unforgiving report on the slimy underbelly of the music biz. But actually, Trynin was wined and dined by major labels, picked up a lot of hype, was treated reasonably well by the label she signed with, and released two real albums, but the company merely lost interest and dropped her when her career went from hot to cold.

So Trynin's story is less heartbreaking than it is depressingly predictable. It's all surely a good learning experience, and this memoir is usually quite enjoyable as Trynin describes her uphill ride to near-stardom. Her writing isn't too deep but it's frequently funny and sharp-witted. However, when things go downhill and Trynin's career sputters, so does this book. In her increasingly numerous passages about feeling lost and overwhelmed by the biz and its disappointments, Trynin is trying to come across as literary in a dark chick-lit sorta way. But she doesn't really have the writing ability to pull it off, and her attempts at self-examination and deeper insights into the biz just don't go anywhere useful. That goes for her coverage of her mixed-up love life too. This book is still a very fun read for those who love the do-it-yourself rock scene, but it doesn't quite reach as deeply as it thinks it does. [~doomsdayer520~]

Australian information needs expansion

The information about Australia's temperate climate needs a little bit of an expansion, for instance: Victoria and Tasmania; which are the most predominant temperate climate states of Australia (particularly Tasmania), as you will notice in the link below. Also New South Wales and a small portion of Queensland have temperate environments. New Zealand needs an entry, perhaps along with alot of other small island countries in the Southern hemisphere, however I'm not sure if they fall into a different climate classification.

On a positive note, I found the book extremely modern, containing the latest environmental and biological scientific data i.e. contrast of vegetation communities shown by 2d illustrations; excellent plant structure images from scanned electron micrographs. Along with excellent photography of landscapes, plant communities and individual plants with close ups of flowers. Most pictures are in colour, with excellent diagrams of plants from a botanical point of view, which could do with illustrative references for the ametuer botanist, like myself.

There is also climatology maps on the regions discussed within the book and alot more. This is a valuable book for the amateur, all students and those within a related professional field.

Nature docent

I'm a recently trained nature docent and checked this book out of the library many times. I found so much information in it that I kept renewing the book I finally decided it was well worth purchasing it. I'm mainly interested in the section on California which at times is overwhelming but I like to "grow into my purchasers" so I've been very satisfied. tt is not for those who want something "watered down" but for those with a real interest in The Mediterranean Clmate and the plant life adapted to this unique environment.

Great overview of mediterranean climates

This book is great. It has plenty of pictures, diagrams and drawings. Most of the pictures are not in color, however, which is its biggest downfall. It is not a detailed evaluation of mediterranean climates nor is it a good plant ID book, but provides an excellent overview for both the layman and scientist. It provides informatin on the plants that make the mediterranean climate unique and the typical plant communities that are found in them. It is great for someone who doesn't want to get bogged down with individual species and wants to see how all the parts fit together. I first checked this book out of my local library and felt it would be such a good reference book for work, play and travel that I had to have it. The book uses the most scientific and inclusive use of the term Mediterranean which means you are going to get descriptions of plant communities from San Diego to Sacramento to San Francisco. For those of us that prefer the more exclusive definitions it may come as a shock that San Francisco and Sacramento could be considered mediterranean so I'm warning you now. I am currently using this book to help plan a trip to Australia as a supplement to Lonely Planet's travel guides. This book has inspired me to visit all the world's mediterranean climates at some point in my life and I'm not even a plant lover.

Very comprehensive workout

Most people don't realize that motocross IS a sport, and a very physically demanding one at that. Even a rider who doesn't compete much needs to be in really good shape if s/he want to enjoy riding at all and avoid injury. This book has everything a rider needs to prepare for riding at any level, including aspiring professionals, if that's their goal. Very demanding, but not impossible to follow. Frankly, anyone who wants to be in top physical shape would do well to use this book.

Whenever my mom asks me a question about Greek mythology,the answer comes pouring out of my mouth,like Odysseus and his men came pouring out of the Trojan horse. This book is great for someone who has never read Greek myths before. I have enjoyed it and learned a lot.

Wow[...] a nice little (87 pages) book that covers Gods & Titans, Hercules, Heroes and Monsters, the Argonauts, the Trojan War and the Odyssey. Only six line drawings illustrate the text, but still this is a very good introduction at a truly affordable price. Readable by a 4th grader with good reading skills or an older student or adult, but with some difficult names.

I read this book and I am a 6th grader. I read it be because it was a book that the whole class had to read. I will tell you I get straight a's and even though I get a's it seriously was a very hard book. I mean there is all these names like Prometheus, Odysseus, Eurytheus, Medusa, Jason, Polydectes, Zeus, Hercules, and many, many more characters than that. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who gets stressed on things when you don't get something or somebody who is younger.

Great textbook.

Business Reorganizations is a well-organized, concise, and practical textbook. The authors do a great job of putting the Bankruptcy Code in context by following the plight of the fictional Aerodynamics Corporation -- a distressed business that is guided through the Chapter 11 process. This hypothetical case -- which is used to illustrate the substantive law in each section of the book -- makes the text a welcome respite from the traditional case book, and I found that this illustrative approach made learning the Bankruptcy Code much easier (and more practical).

Along with making the Bankruptcy Code accessible and easily understood, the authors also ensured that all of the relevant substantive law was covered in detail. Prominent cases are included throughout the text, both in the form of case excerpts and concise notes, and the authors also thoroughly cite and explain the relevant provisions of the Code. Thus, I found the textbook to strike a strong balance between explaining the law in practical terms though the hypothetical Aerodynamics Corporation case while also ensuring that the intricacies of the substantive law are effectively discussed and explored. This balance made my Reorganizations and Workouts class quite enjoyable.

Overall, I found this to be a great textbook. It is one of the few required texts from law school that I have opted to hold onto as I begin my career, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Great for learning the Code and the process!

This book uses a hypothetical corporation that goes through a Chapter 11 reorganization, and by doing so teaches the events of a Chapter 11 proceeding in a very intuitive and effective way. Furthermore, by referencing the Code throughout, the book makes it easy to quickly grasp the relevant provisions of Chapter 11. This book is great for anyone desiring to understand the intricacies of a Chapter 11 Reorganization.
