I took an ICS33 course and DeAnza College in Cupertino, CA ...called Chicano and the Arts. Our professor, Jorge Guevarra assigned this book (1 of 4) for our class. I used it throughout the Spring Quarter 2012. I loved this book. It helped me understand, interpret, analyze, and educate me on chicano CULTURE. Very informative. I learned alot from reading this book; culture clash, reform, adaptations, etc ....Everything comes alive!

Kent Beck is the founder and director of Three Rivers Institute (TRI). His career has combined the practice of software development with reflection, innovation, and communication. He currently divides his time between writing, programming, and coaching. Beck is the author/co-author of Implementation Patterns, Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change 2nd Edition, Contributing to Eclipse, Test-Driven Development: By Example, Planning Extreme Programming, Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns, and the JUnit Pocket Guide.  He received his B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Oregon.

Great for Communication

this is one of the books that I reach for all the time. I use it to explain many concepts and I don't even write smalltalk. I have a hard copy and digital. I've also given a copy away as a gift. this is a must have when trying to build a common vernacular. It has improved communication of ideas for every team I've worked with.

The Zen of OO

I wish more Java/C#/C++ programmers would read this (and maybe even learn Smalltalk) so that they can appreciate the weaknesses in those languages and possibly in their practices that they might not even realize today. I certainly did. While Robert Martin and others have offered up some of the canon of good design for contemporary developers, this little gem really reveals the "feel" of good OO.

About the Author
Thomas H. Ogden, M.D., is a graduate of Amherst College, the Yale School of Medicine, and the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. He has served as an associate psychiatrist at the Tavistock Clinic, London, and is currently Co-director of the Center for the Advanced Study of the Psychoses, a member of the faculty of the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, and a supervising and personal analyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. He teaches, supervises, and maintains a private practice of psychoanalysis in San Francisco.

I am surpised by the previous reviews. I am going to press on this book solely because of the excellent way in which the author has reviewed the subject. The text is as easy to understand and clearly explained as any book could be on such a complicated subject. The insertion and detailing of formulae is related to the text with similar clarity. The author naturally assumes some knowledge of the subject by the reader. If you are at this level the rest is relatively painless. The author's use and command of the English language is as good as his knowledge of the subject of GPS. For those of us that have listened to rooms full of GPS boffins speaking their own dialect this book provides a definitive translation.

Probably an important book for your GPS library, but it's easy to get lost in all the complex equations. Not for someone who is interested in the basics or who wants an overview. If you want the nitty-gritty details, this one's for you.

About the Author

With training in mathematics, statistics, and economics, Mike Sullivan, III has a varied teaching background that includes 15 years of instruction in both high school and college-level mathematics. He is currently a full-time professor of mathematics and statistics at Joliet Junior College. Mike has numerous textbooks in publication in addition to his Introductory Statistics Series, which include a Developmental Math series, and a Precalculus series, which he writes with his father, Michael Sullivan. Mike has built this book in the classroom, using feedback from his students. He is well aware of the challenges of students taking an introductory statistics course. His goal is for students to be more informed interpreters of data, so that they will be better decision-makers and have stronger critical-thinking skills. When not in the classroom or writing, Mike enjoys spending time with his three children, Michael, Kevin, and Marissa, and playing golf.

Schizophrenic Page Layout & Scant Content

The textbook is heavy, the pages are poorly organized and somewhat schizophrenic, and examples are very brief when explaining concepts. I would like to see more examples of concepts, instead of the '1 then ur done.' I ended up withdrawing from my online Stats class because the textbook taught me less than the internet did. Also, the pages possess large margins of white space on both sides of the text, example, and filler boxes; the wasted space ought to have been minimized instead of lengthening the textbook without adding content. The book looks serious, but did not teach concepts seriously. There is little help for students when working on problems, because the content of the book is scant.

No Access Code...

Did not come with an access code (as advertised). When I contacted amazon...the only solution was to return it and rent another. They also recommended that I pay for overnight shipping myself. Although the book is advertised as having an access code, it says in the fine print that the codes are not guaranteed. My class has now started and now I don't have an access code to do the homework. Although I have had great experiences with Amazon Rentals, this has been disappointing and the title is very misleading.
