An exceptionally good piece of creative/practical work about Online Testing

When I first saw that this book was coming to light I had mixed feelings. On one hand, I was hunger for more testing knowledge, both theoretical and practical. On the other hand, I am always apprehensive when books talk about tools. However, the book impressed me as a comprehensive guide to Online Testing. And when I read the following (p.18), I was sure the book is what the market needs:

"The important thing to keep in mind is that the Google Website Optimizer is a tool. (...)It cannot do your thinking for you. It cannot plan your tests. It cannot produce the creative. It cannot interpret your results beyond demonstrating numerical significance and confidence. These things are up to you. If you want the tests you run on the Google Website Optimizer to be meaningful and to provide the intelligence you need to make well informed marketing decisions, then this is the book you need."

The authors cover very thoroughly the Why, the What, and the How of Online Testing. All you need to know from the value of testing to how should you get started. The examples are very enriching and illustrate the power of testing and the bottom line: Testing = $$$.

Part I covers the Why; the authors delve on the power of testing and provide some amazing examples of it (including a masterpiece on Amazon's testing efforts). In addition they walk us through the Google Website Optimizer and provide powerful tips on the tool.

Part II covers the What and the How; the chapters are structured in a very actionable way: "Questions to ask", "Exercises", "What to test", and "Apply this to your site". As you read you can implement the tips instantly. A few examples of what to test are: usability, look & feel, searchability, product presentation, up-sell/cross-sell......

Part III covers some technical aspects of testing. The authors provide interesting information about Google website Optimizer scripts, statistical tests, and other special issues.

Modern Day Scientific Advertising - a Contemporary Classic For Today's Marketer

As someone who has spent some four decades in direct response advertising, I know the value of testing. Like all successful ad people and many successful marketers, I have read and re-read the classic, "Scientific Advertising" by the great Claude Hopkins. It's a classic --- even to this day. Of course, it's quite dated.

Fast forward to "Always Be Testing" by Bryan Eisenberg and John Quarto-vonTivadar with Lisa T. Davis. This book brings Hopkin's important work into the modern age and again puts testing to the forefront, where it belongs. And no one is better qualified to write the book than Eisenberg.

The authors explain Google Web site Optimizer in detail. They show how to use it and how to perform your Web site tests. They discuss the A/B test and the multivariable test. But they go beyond that. They tell you what to test and how to test.

Moreover, they go beyond Google Web site Optimizer and discuss other things to test. All of this information will help you to get far more conversions. With all we have at our fingertips, not testing is just inexcusable.

In my opinion, this book is a modern day classic and is as valuable to our time as Hopkin's book was to his. I hope all my clients read this book and absorb it. I hope they put it into practice.

I've had many experiences when I didn't like the copy I wrote and yet it worked exceedingly well when it went live or, if direct mail, was sent out. I've also had clients who didn't like the copy I wrote for them but I'd tell them to test it. When they did, it succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

So testing is key to success in marketing. This book is a must-read if you intend to be successful in your online marketing. I highly recommend it to you.

Don't start unless you are going to optimize your site while reading the book

I have to admit I got stuck in the middle of this book. I would not start this book unless you are actively optimizing your website, otherwise as it gets too technical for light reading. However, if you are doing an optimization of your site this book will be very valuable to you. I got bogged down with Part I, and advise you to skim it and go directly to Part II.

I'm going to skip past the sermon about how marketing and tech don't get along, because most of us have heard it before, so you can probably afford to skip it here as well. Secondly, a lot of Part I seemed like I would be able to figure it out just by using Google Online Optimizer, but you may enjoy the reference here. Once you get through the dozens of pages of the marketing vs. tech debate you will find the bit about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs interesting so make sure you don't skip it. Finally, if you learn like I do from examples/case studies, you will find dozens of them in Part II of the book. Many of them even have great screen shots, great for visual learners like me.

Pretty Good Book

This book was pretty good. Directed mostly towards young adults; it's divided into 3 sections of 6 stories each: Evil, Darkness and Beasts. The EVIL section deals with mostly the general supernatural-- ghosts, unexplained experiences..etc. The DARKNESS section deals with mostly psychological aspects of horror and suspense. And the BEASTS section is pretty self explainatory- Vampires, Werewolves..etc.

The best stories in the book in my opinion were "Imagining Things" in the Darkness section where a young boy 'imagines' he see dark shadowy creatures that seem to 'haunt' or follow him. Or is it really all in his imagination after all? The pyschological suspense and eerie ending really made this one stand out for me. The next best story is "Grandma Kelly" in the Beast section. A girl having a bad day is about to realize how much worse it can get when she runs into a seemingly harmless old woman on the way home from school. This story combines a bit of dark humor with a clever ending.

Generally, I found that the rest of the stories were either confusing(Incident Report and Empire of Dirt, which were filled with, in my opinion too much technical jargon) or either were somewhat depressing or just plain odd. Only one story really had any gore (Saving Face)It was an overall good book, and while many of the stories weren't really SCARY in the typical sense; the book was very entertaining and I could hardly put it down. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a variety of supernatural and horror short stories.

Social psychologist Halvorson, a blogger for Psychology Today and assistant professor of psychology at Lehigh University, tackles attainment of goals in every area of life from relationships to sports. Extensively reviewing past studies on self-esteem, motivation, and pursuit of goals, Halvorson sidesteps conventional notions about achieving success, particularly the idea that one should imagine oneself achieving goals easily. She cites studies by psychologist Gabriele Oettingen showing that those who think the path is difficult invest more effort and work harder: for instance, "people who believed that getting a good job after college would be easy sent out fewer applications." The ideal, Halvorson says, is to think positively about achieving one's goals but to think realistically about the effort that will be required to achieve them. Halvorson then goes on to advise readers on how to set appropriate goals, avoid obstacles, and exercise self-control to stay on track. "Don't visualize success," she warns. "Instead visualize the steps you will take in order to succeed." About the Author
Heidi Grant Halvorson is a social psychologist, educational consultant, and most recently assistant professor of psychology at Lehigh University. She has received several grants from the National Science Foundation. In addition to her work as author and co-editor of the highly-regarded academic book The Psychology of Goals (Guilford, 2009), she has authored papers in her field’s most prestigious journals.

Dr. Grant Halvorson is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and was recently elected to the highly selective Society for Experimental Social Psychology. She received her PhD from Columbia University working with Carol Dweck (author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success), and her BA in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.

A great guide to success

As a fellow researcher in psychology, I ordered "Succeed" because I was familiar with Dr. Halvorson's scientific accomplishments and found it interesting that she was writing outside the closed-off world of elite scientific journals. After a snowy weekend of reading, I'm stunned by what she has created: "Succeed" is extraordinary, and something only a tiny number of my colleagues could ever have done so well.

In "Succeed," Dr. Halvorson applies real science to the real goals and struggles we all face: losing weight, building better relationships, getting a raise, strengthening willpower, and even just getting up from the couch on those days we feel stuck. Whether one wants to get out of a lousy rut in life or go further faster, "Succeed" presents a comprehensive, step-by-step, scientifically-sound "toolkit" for success.

Using examples from her own life as a working professional, wife, and mother, Dr. Halvorson describes the best ways to frame our goals, plan for success, and put those plans into action - and that includes dealing with moments when we fall down along the way. Piles of scientific studies reveal that HOW we pursue our goals powerfully influences how likely we are to be successful, and many of the most effective methods are genuinely surprising. In "Succeed," Dr. Halvorson takes those studies from the laboratory to life.

Finally, a credible, science-based book of "You Can Do It!!"

I loved this book, because it combines two of my favorite things: surprising and interesting science described in simple English, and the writing of a brilliant and very funny woman.

First, the science: "Succeed" describes different aspects of setting and achieving goals from the perspective of research psychology. Every suggestion in this book is backed up with, "... and here is how psychologists proved that it works:", with a discussion of some crazy study involving vinegar Kool-aid or internet disses or Robin Williams. The other cool thing about Dr. Grant Halvorson's work here is that she takes interesting psychology results and explains succinctly how to use them in real ways to improve your life, in whatever area of your life that needs improvement. Her advice is left general, which I like; what it takes to lose weight or change jobs or quit smoking is at heart the same stuff, and Dr. Grant Halvorson knows that stuff well. The only downside of this book is a minor one-- she will have you convinced that, say, action X is exactly the right one to take for a given situation, but instead of moving on, she'll repeat a few more times why you should take action X and give you many more convincing studies than you need. They're still interesting, but from a proselytizing standpoint, enough already! You had me at the second or third study!

Next, the writer: Dr. Grant Halvorson's writing reads like that girlfriend you turn to when you're going through a rough patch, who takes you out for a beer and tells you how not only has she been there, here's how she got through it, here's what worked for your other friends, and here, have another beer. She illustrates her intellectual points with perfect anecdotes from her own experience, e.g. with her prevention-focused German mother, her beloved, hapless philosopher husband, or the ending of her first marriage. She is not some ivory tower scientist; she has a personal understanding of how we struggle.

This book is life changing. If you want to finally, finally meet those goals you keep setting and falling short on, (or figure out whether you should just chuck them and move on), you need "Succeed".

Superior Content, Engaging, and Practical - WOW!

This book was an absolutely wonderful read; I couldn't put it down. I read a lot of books like this and Heidi Halvorson has produced a truly superior product with this book. Every chapter is clearly composed, filled with stories and examples, describes the research behind the conclusions, and ends with a bulleted summary of the key concepts.

There are some counter-intuitive ideas presented, all backed up by research, that can't help but improve your chances of success in achieving your goals - whatever they may be. I can't recommend this book highly enough and I believe you will be very pleased should you decide to get it.

Teach First Grade Math With Games Instead of Workbooks

If you are looking for a better way to teach children math in the early grades, you must read this book.

In Young Children Reinvent Arithmetric, Professor Constance Kamii takes you on a journey of discovery as she works with teacher Georgia DeClark in her first grade classroom. Together they work through the first grade math curriculum finding games and real life situations that will assist students in developing the mathematical thinking skills that underlie the curriculum goals.

The book begins with background information on Piaget's Theory of number, demonstrating how children develop logical-mathematical thinking by interacting with the world and each other. In Part Two the goals and objectives of the curriculum are explained. In Part Three the activities used to teach the children are explained in great detail so that teachers will understand how to use them in their own classrooms. In Part 4 The teacher tells her story. Part Five provides the program evaluation with the research and testing that was done. The children in DeClark's classroom are compared to children in a classroom using traditional teaching methods.

Constance Kamii has been transforming the Constructivist Theory of the origins of thinking by Jean Piaget into practical activities for teaching for decades. Her work is so important in these days of standardized testing and NCLB.

Kamii shows how children think

It's helpful to have at least a passing acquaintance with Jean Piaget's theories before reading this book, but it's not necessary. Kamii shows in so many many ways that the thought life of young children is different from our own. Not only should this be required reading for all Kindergarten through second grade teachers, but also for those politicians and political pundits whose back to basics (and did we ever really leave the basics?) approach to curriculum simply makes life miserable for these poor kids. (because what they think are the basics aren't really the true basics of thought)
One interesting aspect of the book is that it was in part co-written with a primary school teacher who tries out some of Kamii's ideas in her own classroom. She is initially skeptical that Kamii knows what she's talking about, but later realizes the truth of it when confronted with the evidence of her own senses.
After you read this book, you'll never see a kid do a problem like 5 + 1 or 16 + 7 with the same eyes again.

This book is required reading for all of my new and continuing teachers; the chapters on Autonomy as the Aim of Education and the harmful effects of algorithms found in each of her 2nd edition books for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades are essential to teachers' sense-making. Dr. Kamii shines a bright light on children's thinking and the role of teachers [and parents] in prioritizing meaningful exchanges of ideas with and between young people.
