Kara Powell, Ph.D., is the executive director of the Fuller Youth Institute and a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary (see www.fulleryouthinstitute.org). As a 20-year youth ministry veteran, she speaks regularly at youth ministry conferences and is the author or co-author of a number of books, including Deep Justice Journeys, Essential Leadership, Deep Justice in a Broken World, Deep Ministry in a Shallow World, Sticky Faith, and the Good Sex Youth Ministry Curriculum. Kara and her husband have three children.

Great teaching

I love these series of books. They teach Biblical truth in a way that is engaging for Middle Schoolers. There are so many options with each lesson I could never fit everything into a single class. But, if you are a little creative and flexible, it is easy to customize this for your purposes.

About the Author
Bruce Hanington is an associate professor, director of graduate studies, and former program chair of industrial design in the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has dedicated his teaching and research to methods and practices for human centered design, with an emphasis on design ethnography, participatory design, and the meaning of form in context. He has consulted on design projects with GE Appliance and Johnson and Johnson, and his work has been published in Design Issues, The Design Journal, and Interactions, with chapters in Designing Inclusive Futures and Design and Emotion: The Experience of Everyday Things.Bella Martin is a design practitioner and independent consultant in Atlanta, Georgia, where she brings her expertise for design research methods to companies who are new to user-centered design but eager to give their users a voice in the design process. She holds a Master of Design in Communication Planning and Information Design from Carnegie Mellon University, where she first began her ongoing work in visualizing user-centered research methods.

Indispensable

As a user experience designer with 10 years of experience and clients like National Geographic, Stephen Hawking, Best Buy, Bon Iver, and Harvard University, I have experience with nearly every method described in this book. Yet when I pack up to go to work or consulting gigs or client meetings or lectures or workshops, this is the first book that goes into my bag before I leave home. When I'm not carrying it with me it is usually still close at hand. There are many more inspiring, industry-changing texts on the market, but Universal Methods of Design is simply the most valuable book in my day-to-day practice.

I thought of saying that this book is to user-centered designers what Strunk's Elements of Style is to writers, but the analogy isn't quite right. Writers generally know the best practices for semicolon usage and unordered list formatting. In contrast, most people that claim the title "user experience designer" still spend the majority of their time wireframing or designing in Photoshop. It's really not your fault, it is ours; the UX community has done very little to help educate entering UX professionals, so you have likely never been exposed to most of the methods detailed in this text. You don't know how powerful a simple technique like Affinity Mapping can be, or how the investment in LEGO's Serious Play products can yield a hundred-fold return, or how an absurd hour spent writing love letters and hate letters to yourself can significantly improve a product. But for the aspiring UX designer, this book is an essential introduction to the methods used in professional experience design projects.

For those of us that have experience with these design methods: we all have dealt with those challenging projects, difficult stakeholders, or unique product requirements that seem to exhaust our standard design toolbox. Those situations where our usual methods for scoping, defining, researching, modeling, prototyping, producing, and testing seem inadequate. In these situations, there is no better reference than what Hanington and Martin have put together in this book. Buy it, and if you are underwhelmed then I'll buy you a drink and let you hassle me about it when I see you at the next conference.

I wanted to love it

Format and layout of this text is attractive, although I'm not sure why designers would choose to use gray 10-point sans serif font; pretty hard on the eyes.

My main complaint is that the writing style is (in my view) obscure. For example, "Prototyping in general is the tangible representation of artifacts at various levels of resolution, for development and testing of ideas within the design teams and with clients and users. However, whereas many prototypes only demand passive viewing for concept communication and review, experience prototyping fosters active participation to encounter a live experience with products, systems, services, or spaces."

Writing a technical book like this is a lot of work and I don't mean to take a cheap shot. It's just that the book would benefit greatly from some aggressive editing. The topic and ideas presented are interesting, just not very accessible.

A Current, Comprehensive Survey of Best Practices in Design Research Methodology

This is a reference book and a survey book, of one hundred current methods in design research methodology, for the fitting of a product, service or system to a user, client or customer population. The survey and the text are the product of the superb learning and research environment for these methods at Carnegie Mellon University.

Methods are listed in alphabetic order. Each is given a two page treatment; one page of text and another of figures and diagram. URLs, standard reference sources are conveniently listed on the same page, and not in an index at the back of the text. The treatment of these diverse methods in identical format makes a cross comparison of methods simple and fast. Further, an indication is given (an index of 1 through 5) of whether the method is useful at the early or the late phases of the research process so that methods can be compared within phase-catagories.

The format and page layout in the hard-copy version are such that moving between methods, and cross comparing methods will be easier in the paper format than in the electronic. At the bargain price of 24 USD this is both an affordable and very complete aid to current best practices in design survey methodology.

(July 10, 1998) Reviewer: A reader from Minneapolis, MN I was looking for a book that would teach me enough about the current technology in electronic component packaging and multilayer PCBs that I wouldn't feel like a fool working with manufacturing engineers, PCB layout people, PCB manufacturers, and assemblers. I think I learned quite a bit; now people think I have years of experience with these technologies. I really like the format. Each chapter in this book is written by a different person: there are people from HP, TI, IBM, Motorola and dozens of others that offer theory and practical knowledge. I think this book is quite useful, but I also think two things are necessary to make it work: (1) moderate electronics/PCB background and (2) a more experienced co-worker who can answer any questions that you have. The best and most up to date book of its kind. Must have reference book

The only reason I give this book a 4 star rating is because of the information that was removed from fourth to fifth edition. To serve as a complete reference you must buy both editions. The topics covered are significantly different.

Excellent books. Must have for any person involved in Printed circuit board industry.

I bougth this book to have a reference on the desing of PCB. (How wide to design the traces, what distance should i use betweeen traces...) I found it prety useless.
Nevertheless, it is a goog book to undestand the process and manifacturing of PCB, if this is your business

I stand and slow clap. Wow, no words. An enthralling, fantastic read!

Marvelously wrought, Mr. Southard! What an awesome story, woven meticulously perfect until it all comes together where the reader and the actors of this story have their day of reckoning. It was one of those stories I could see read by an English Literature class and discussed for the many things it tells us about people, their motives, their fantasies, their obsessions, their human spirit. Mr. Southard, once again you have taken my breath away. I couldn't believe you could write anything as good and soul enriching as A Jane Austen Daydream. I was wrong.

This is a story with soap opera characteristics. This multi-layered, well-written, and extremely engaging novel with its unique plot and story setting, felt like a classic. The author dives into the minds of writers, teachers, architects and a wildly talented artist, some with quite twisted tendencies leaving me spellbound with its message.

Each character has his/her own story, and each impacts the other in some fashion. Mr. Southard creates memorable characters struggling with ordinary challenges -- a professor trying to save her marriage, an architect wanting to be noticed, a builder who's bored with just building the usual, a writer working to create a new genre, a new way of storytelling, a wealthy man who marries to keep his secrets, a security guard without much of a presence and an artist with ideas encompassing greatness. Yet, this story is anything but ordinary.

There were moments of chuckling, moments of tears, moments of incredulity. The story gives us hope, the human spirit has no bounds, where the ending could very well be a new beginning, a new direction in life. Grasp it my readers, for nothing is more spectacular and mysterious as the human mind and what it is able to achieve.

Permanent Spring Showers is a fast moving tale of life, frustration, cheating spouses and consequences. As in real life, everyone seems to want something or someone they don’t have. Cheating is the tool they resort to getting what they think they want. The characters do not foresee the consequences of their actions, which are often long-lasting. More like a rock thrown into a pond that makes concentric circles to the edge.

Most readers will feel sympathetic toward Rebecca as she discovers her cheating spouse and loses her precious books in one fell swoop. They’ll also understand her impulsive need for revenge too. The book is a guilty pleasure for anyone who has wanted revenge on an unfaithful partner.

This serious subject that could turn maudlin is handled in a humorous and page-turning fashion. If all infidelities, heartaches, and divorces could be handled in such a succinct and upbeat fashion, then the world would be a more pleasant place. All that said, it is an entertaining novel, that at times, is also romantic too.

Permanent Spring Showers is a good vacation or weekend book when you want to get away from everything.

"Permanent Spring Showers" - where to start....
I was meant to review this work two days ago, but unfortunately I am a little (a lot) behind in my reading and reviews (such is life....).
To make things worse, I am not a speed reader and do not / refuse to skim - I like to take in and savour every word.

At 472 pages this book was a tour de force as I had just over 36 hours to read it... but it was, oh, so worth it. Lately I have been incredibly fortunate to have read a string of very good books, but I thought that this one was certainly something special.
I don't think that I am easily pleased - my standard rating for a good solid book is three stars (I liked it). I am no literary buff either, and although I did study literature and literary analysis through to High School, it was not English Lit, and finding hidden meaning into every line of someone's work was never my thing.
I like to read and I know what I like and what strikes me. ... so in that respect I might be a complete philistine - many apologies.

Enough about me and my disclaimers, and back to the book in question.

Permanent Spring Showers is a complex tale and you need to read its description VERY carefully...
Yes, it all starts with an affair: Bob cheats on his wife Rebecca and tells her as she is just about to leave for a four-day conference in Chicago, where she has a really crappy time. There, Rebecca surely meets a very interesting character, Vince, and ends up having an affair herself.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

By 30% of the book the author introduces you to about 14 active characters, and several other peripheral ones. I am generally terrible with names, therefore, at that point in the book, I had to actually test myself to figure out if I was truly managing to keep up with what was being presented - yep! I drew a map of the characters and their relationships from memory... and I only got a couple of very minor players wrong, which means Mr Southard must have been doing something right with his narration to get through my very thick skull and make all of those characters memorable for me! (see picture with my early morning scribbles).

All of the players are somehow related to Vince, who lives and breathes art; who is charismatic, sexy, exceptional, admirable, despicable, romantic, sensitive and a complete bastard all at the same time. Vince is unique, larger than life and always inspiring.

Permanent Spring Showers is littered with poetry and different points of view, which are very effective and fascinating. Whilst most of the narration is from a third person point of view (POV), Steve's is always presented in the first person, and Jenn's narration occurs in the form of her journals written as personal letters to deceased classical authors. This is definitely a tale that will stay with me for a long time.
The minus mark relates to the ending of this piece; the resolution was somewhat different from what I was expecting and would have liked to see. That is not to say that the realm of possibilities is not open. In fact, I could easily see a sequel to this... there are just so many possibilities... and that is definitely a book I would read.

Between the hot, hot sex, angst, emotions and intrigue this is one of the better erotic stories I have read in a long time! Tears flow when Ace and Lindsey run into a rough time. This relationship is one that is intense with factors of his father and brother being pretty much ba#;6)!/!!'s. I love Liv's epilogue.

Got the first book free. I have not read any books by this writer. Started reading it and of course had to buy the rest of the books. I just ended getting the box set. I have to say well written what caught my attention was the story line. Can not wait to read the pursuit box set. If you haven't read this box set it is worth it. Caught me from the start to the finish. Happy readings

I don't know what happened

The first book of this series intrigued me and sucked me in. So I did what I hardly ever do and paid seven bucks for the remaining three. I did not get my money's worth.
The difference between the writing and clarity of the first book and the next three was shocking. It was like they were written by two different people. I forced myself to finish them because of the price, but it was frustrating. I won't go into detail about the story as I just want it to be over. I will say if you read it that you have to suspend all reality to get anything at all from it. The relationships were ridiculous, the so-called heroine was extremely naive, stupid and skanky and the plot was so contrived and thin to say the least.
If you read the first book, stop there. It doesn't get any better.

About the Author
David C. Funder is Distinguished Professor of Psychology and former chair of the department at the University of California, Riverside. Winner of the 2009 Jack Block Award for Distinguished Research in Personality, he is a former editor of the Journal of Research in Personality, and a past president of the Association for Research in Personality as well as the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He is best known for his research on personality judgment and has also published research on delay of gratification, attribution theory, the longitudinal course of personality development, and the psychological assessment of situations. He has taught personality psychology to undergraduates at Harvey Mudd College, Harvard University, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and continues to teach the course every year at the University of California, Riverside.

this book is as good as it gets

Used this for a large personality class in Winter 2013. I think the book is as good or better than anything else out there. I searched for a good text for my upper division university students, and chose this one rather than the one I used last year that studied theorists and their stories. I decided it is best to use an overview book because personality is getting so complex, it is perhaps the most complex topic in psychology. I also teach abnormal psychology and find the personality course more complex, because abnormal psych can rely on the DSM-IV as a teaching paradigm. There is not central paradigm for teaching personality, so it's a complex topic. The author takes so many different views on each topic that it can be challenging reading. Yet that is the gift he gives in this book -- that he is ethical and fair. He doesn't state opinions that are not true, not even half-truths. He gives as many possible views on personality as possible and does not get on the psychological/empirical high-horse and pretend personality research is clear. For example in the chapter on culture and personality, he doesn't claim that culture determines personality in any specific ways, which would be tempting to do if an author was in to oversimplification. Rather, he shows how it's complex and that is the beauty of personality. This is advanced scholarly learning--to hold back and not get to the point in a simplistic way, because getting to the point would be inaccurate. As a teacher I balanced the text with lecture information that included some fun and solid "points" and take-away learning, so the students had something solid to hang on to. In that way I think the students had a balanced class experience, and the reviews were good. Students who actually read the book were well-informed by the end of the quarter and could talk intelligently about personality.
I held back one star, because I do think this book needed more animation, pictures, images. I understand he took these out, but it does lack visual stimulation. But again, the writing is thorough. And --don't forget, this book is $60 cheaper than other books with identical information perhaps presented less well. Choosing texts that not inflated in terms of price is important, so I am glad they sell this book at a reasonable price. Also this book is used at so many universities, it's not hard to resale this book.

Very little actual content, and biased

I used this book for a college course on personality, and didn't get anything from it. It's very long and winding, and there is little to no justification for points made. I didn't feel like I could trust the author to deal with topics evenhandedly, after seeing in several points that he had left out key sides to a debate and presented one (often not even the predominant one) as wholly correct - I would have just assumed this as trustworthy if I hadn't had previous background on these topics, and wonder what he did to the presentation of others I hadn't encountered before.

Not worth the time, if you have a choice don't buy this. If you do, make sure you read something else on the topics presented or you could end up with a very warped view. There are lots of great textbooks that delve into similar issues and do so much more concisely and robustly.

Administrative Assistants's and Secretary's Handbook

If you are working in any industry as an Administrative Assistant or Secretary, you will find this handbook an asset to your office bookshelf covering all facets of organizing and refreshing your memory to the numerous components in daily office operations.

Section Five -Language Usage contains proper grammar, style, and common English usage problems that enhances writing everything from notes to formal letters and includes the differences of words used such as affect and effect. In Section Six-Financial Activities is where bookkeeping and accounting refreshers in Business Math are located and includes fractions, decimals, and percentages.

A very useful and informative part of this handbook is Section Three-Office Productivity Software for Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and One-Note that also includes using Apple Macintosh applications. There are other well-written sections involving email, web conferencing, and mobile computing including iPad, iPhone, and androids aiding in use of office equipment along with laptop and tablet computers. When you have perused the language, financial and software sections, you are ready to master the several mailing services section to dispatch your finished masterpiece to the intended recipient. There are other informative sections in this reference handbook to list but all areas discussed would take at least another full page.

I recommend this excellent reference handbook to all employed in positions that require an administrative assistant’s or secretarial staff responsibility as it is a supplement to any company organization.

Has a useful language usage section

Very comprehensive reference guide for any size office. Has a useful language usage section, as well as tips for meetings, webinars, and PowerPoint. There is also a computer troubleshooting section as well as an overview of Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
