The Story Behind the Story:�Measure of Devotion

It all started with Kale.

Inspiration comes in many forms. Sometimes a story develops slowly over time, inspiration trickling in. Other times, it comes in a flash. With�Measure of Devotion, it came as an image.

I was standing outside my bedroom closet when, as clear as day, I saw Kale in the last scene of�Measure of Devotion. I instantly forgot what I was doing. There was something about him that drew me in. The anguish on his face was so compelling. I had to know how he got there. What had happened to him?

Over the next few days, Kale told me his story. I was instantly in love with him, and getting to know him and Jason was like connecting with old friends. I even found myself feeling for Renee and the difficult situation in which society had placed her. All the characters came together to form the story of�Measure of Devotion.

The first person who ever read�Measure of Devotion�was my best friend. I actually read the end to her while she was driving and I was positively giddy to see that she cried. I was elated that she felt so close to the characters that she was brought to tears by their pain. The very first thing she wanted to know was what happened next.

"That's the end," I told her.

"You can't do that," she said.

From the beginning, I had intended�Measure of Devotion�to be the story of this particular slice of Kale's life. Nothing more. I was happy with the ending. Kale got what he wanted, and that was that.

"Well then, write a sequel just for me." As if novels are the product of a long weekend.

This argument went back and forth and ended with me conceding that I would remain open to inspiration for a sequel, but I wasn't going to force anything.

Life continued.

Work progressed on getting�Measure of Devotion�published, but there was that nagging voice of my best friend demanding a sequel. I spoke to Karen, my editor, about it and she liked the story as a standalone. She understood that I liked it as it was: a beautiful, bittersweet story of a man who experienced true love instead of the selfish love that is so rampant. However, she did think that a sequel would certainly be welcome if one came to me.

Meanwhile, I moved on to other stories while�Measure of Devotion�was being prepared for publication.

And that's when it happened.

As soon as I turned my attention to another story, inspiration struck again. Only this time, it was Jason who called to me. I saw him sitting in the bar at the beginning of�Measure of Strength. I needed to know where he was going from there.

It didn't take long for�Measure of Strength�to take form after that. Additionally, I knew what would happen in a third book, although I didn't think at the time anyone would ever be interested.

Why do I tell you this now?

Mainly because several people have stated that I only wrote�Measure of Devotion�as a cliffhanger and setup for�Measure of Strength. The truth is, the sequel wasn't even a thought until right before�Measure of Devotion�was released. I'm sure after reading this, those of you who thought I was mean before will think me doubly so now that you know I was willing to let�Measure of Devotion�stand.

Also, my best friend wanted credit for the sequel.

So there you have it, the story of how�Measure of Devotion�came to be.

sweet conclusion

4-5 stars. This sequel to measure of devotion concluded the story well. I won't say much, to avoid accidental spoilers. I hope at a later date the author will sell the two books as one tome. As a standalone this was good, well written and intense, but it cannot be enjoyed without reading the first one. Still, when considering the two books together it is easily 4.5-5 stars, and you cannot read the first one without reading this one as well. I adore Jason and kale even though I want to smack them both, and will likely reread these two books.

I am sucker for love stories and this was the premise for the ultimate unrequited love story, turned fair tale romance. However far fetched of a possibility this story ever having been true, C. Faron did an amazing job of bringing this dream to life. After having read this duology, I am utterly ruined for all other love stories for a long time. It's been approx two since I finished this and I still have flash backs of my favorite scenes of love, anger, passion and compassion.

Jason begins on a path of destruction as an alcoholic and abusive slave owner, only to have been gifted a compassionate and wise slave Kale who has a hidden agenda to make his own life comfortable. Only, they fall into a romantic relationship of sorts then are forced to lead separate lives only to reconnect years later. Jason is required to prove himself as a changed man and worthy of the love he was denied in the earlier stages of their journey. Without giving away too much of this story, I strongly recommend this duet to anyone who has appreciation for a well written love story and respects alternative life styles.

First, it says from the get-go that this is a sequel, but I would like to emphasize that. You cannot read this one without reading the first one first. Also, you cannot read the first one and then not read this one. I believe in my review of the first one I called it a trap. I wasn't lying. Buy both at once, save yourself the time. The first one is still free on kindle so that's not so bad since you can use the online cloud reader for free without buying the kindle.

The sequel is just as good as the first, if not better. We have a few new characters namely Martin and Sophie who are both delightful in their own ways, with some of the minor characters from the first book popping up but of course the focus is on Kale and Jason. There's a bit of a role reversal; Kale always so calm and helping Jason along, but now Jason is well, more calm and helping Kale. I don't want to say much more because I don't want to give anything away.

I will says that this one is safe to read. It is the last book so when you get to the end of this one, that's it, the end, no trap to buy a third one. :)

Second in the Englesfors trilogy

It's the start of a new school year and the remaining Chosen Ones have an all new evil to face. But first they'll have to survive junior year.

Nicolaus recovers his memories at last, only to abandon the girls just as the Council arrives for Anna-Karin's trial. As they girls rally behind her things start to fall apart at home for Vanessa and Minoo. Things aren't rosy for Linn�a or Ida either. Linn�a is facing trouble with her Social Services rep and Ida is finally reconsidering some of her... quirks.

Meanwhile, the town of Engelsfors is undergoing something of a happy, yellow, Stepford like transformation and it's beginning to unsettle the girls.

I'd mentioned in my review of THE CIRCLE that I'd come away from it with the biggest book hangover ever and it was so true. I was seriously dying to get back to the story and FIRE was oh, so worthy of a follow up! Course now I have to wait for the US release of THE KEY but that's ok, I'm sure I can amuse myself in the meantime.

Readers, there is none of the sophomore slump here! FIRE suffers none of the typical middle book tendencies. Nope, here you have another installment chock full of teen troubles, witchy issues, and magic. We finally get a little more of a glimpse at the Council as well as Mathilda's story. And Ida! We get Ida's point of view - disturbing as that may be. And yes, we're also perfectly set up for the final installment of the trilogy.

Again I don't want to give too much away so I'll end by saying that I am going to be incredibly said to see this series end! I love these characters and I think Efgren and Strandberg have done a truly fantastic job capturing all the pain and awkwardness of being a teenager, while torturing their characters even more with the whole coming apocalypse thing!

Just as good as the first book!

This is the first sequel to The Circle, which is hands down one of my favourite Swedish YA novels of all time. Following up after a success like that is bound to be hard, so when I picked this up I did so with a healthy dose of anticipation. In short, I was nervous.

But oh, how I didn't need to be. This is just as good as the first book. In fact, it may even be better than the first book - I haven't quite decided what I think yet. What I do know is I flew through the pages of this title as if the fire wasn't just in the title, but chasing me down a road leading straight to the middle of magically charged Swedish small city Engelsfors. If you liked The Circle, this sequel is a given read.

After reading the first book, I quickly dived into this one seeing if this book moved at a better pace than the first one. I found that this book follows the first one similarly but does dive deeper into the characters plot lines.

Plot: This plot is pretty much the same as the first book, picking up were the last book left off. The reader jumps from character to characters only this time, the reader gets a little more information. I like this. The plot also moves with their powers and the discovery of a book that holds possible answers to their future. Again, this is another area in the book where I felt information was given but certainly not enough. I figured that maybe cause it is the sequel, the reader may get more info on the book when I get to the third book.

Characters: This story does move a bit slowly when it comes to the characters. I latched on to two story lines that held my interest quite a bit. Vanessa and Minoo are characters that I seem to relate to better and really got into their plot lines. There are other characters that I really could not get into, still, they all played a part in each other story.

Ending: The ending is quite dramatic with the death of a character. I was not expecting it and well it certainly peaks my interest as to what has happened to her. She is dead but not. At this point, I may pick up the third book just to see what will happen.

Overall, I felt like this story is better than the first. It’s pick up dramatically from the first book, finally giving the reader much more info. Still, like the first book, you must pay attention. There is still plenty of hopping between characters and if you are not careful, you will find yourself confused. Fire is an excellent addition.

Sylvia's Contribution to Literature

I didn't expect this to be literature and I wasn't disappointed in that respect. The narration covers Sylvia's admiration for James Joyce in detail, especially in how she helped him by publishing Ulysses when no one else would. The rest are thumbnail sketches of personalities that entered her store over the years. She obviously wasn't impressed by Hemingway for reasons uncited and it's a bit disappointing in that respect, but he wasn't alone. One thing is clear, however: the years she writes about clearly indicate that all the would-be's and hangers-on who had the money for passage to Paris arrived expecting to see the avant-garde of literature when they themselves became part of the circus, a circus without a ringmaster who became part of the generation that lived without a purpose.

While it must be said that Beach herself was not the best of writers, her world certainly revolved around many that were and even her somewhat clumsy literary style cannot detract from the tale of this epic time in creative history. It's a hit!

Ok, I admit I have not read it yet. But it's because I can't get my copy back! I loaned the book to the science teacher at my son's school, and asked her to take a look to see what she thought. She liked what she saw, and gave it to a 3rd grader who loves science to see if he liked it and could understand it. He did, so much so that he begged to keep it to finish! Clearly it's a hit! I bought another copy for the school to keep in the science class. And eventually, I and my 4th grader will get our copy back to read!

About the Author
William M. Trochim (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is a Professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University and a Professor of Public Health in the Department of Healthcare Policy and Research at the Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC). He is the Director of the Cornell Office for Research on Evaluation and Director of Evaluation for Extension and Outreach at Cornell, and the Director of Evaluation for the WCMC's Clinical and Translational Science Center. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate required courses in applied social research methods since joining the faculty at Cornell in 1980. Trochim's research interests include the theory and practice of research, conceptualization methods, strategic and operational planning methods, performance management and measurement, and change management. His current research is primarily in the areas of translational research, research-practice integration, evidence-based practice, and evaluation policy.

James P. Donnelly, SUNY-Buffalo Dr. Donnelly is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology at the University at Buffalo. He completed his undergraduate degree at Allegheny College, his masters at Claremont Graduate University and his doctorate at the University at Buffalo. He teaches courses related to research methods and health psychology at the graduate level. Previously a psychologist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, his research and clinical interests are in quality of life issues related to chronic and life limiting illness. He is also affiliated with the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care in Buffalo. He lives in Clarence, New York with his wife Kerry and sons Seamus and Paddy.
